Bank manager Charlie reconnects with his high school friend Max. Max fakes their deaths and gives them new identities. They head to Puerto Rico for a wild second chance at life. Those identities belong to men who are being hunted over a secret cancer cure. The movie is a crude buddy action comedy full of chases, product placement, and loud Happy Madison style antics.
The film does not push progressive identity messaging. Women mostly show up as objects, obstacles, or late twist villains. An off screen male affair and gay panic jokes work as crude comedy, not affirming queer stories. The real story stays on male friendship, midlife escape, and a chemo company that wants to bury a cure. A sentimental cure and pardon ending wraps the friendship plot. Critics called the film juvenile, sexist, and mean spirited rather than identity progressive.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Do-Over.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Modern Florida and Puerto Rico buddy comedy with a mixed supporting cast typical of studio and Netflix fare, without an audience-visible diversity-quota pattern or identity-framed hero casting.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Dialogue is crude, gross-out, and interpersonal, with no progressive activist speech about race, gender systems, DEI, or current identity politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Premise is fake death, male friendship, adventure, and a cancer-cure conspiracy, while sexuality beats play as derisive comedy rather than affirming identity-first messaging.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
A big chemotherapy company tries to suppress a cure. That works as a mild stock villain plot. It is a generic conspiracy device. It does not frame modern activist attacks on patriarchy, whiteness, colonial guilt, or culture-war institutions.
5%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. because this is an original screenplay with no source-canon or historical-figure identity rewrite.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No sustained anti-woke or forced-diversity complaint cycle, and critical heat ran the other way toward sexism, homophobia, and laziness.
0%
Creator track record context
Key creatives sit low on activist identity work. Sandler and Happy Madison producers sit near the floor, writers sit in the low teens, and Brill sits moderate. The team profile is commercial comedy, with only a light Netflix platform link.
