Peter Williams is an American Catholic priest who serves a poor town in Mexico. Eighteen years after a failed exorcism, a demon returns through Esperanza, a young woman held in prison. Peter must face the secret that he sexually assaulted Esperanza’s mother while a demon controlled him. He must also face the fact that Esperanza is his daughter. The movie mixes bloody supernatural horror with guilt, shame, and dark religious images.
The story shows Peter hiding his crime while church leaders protect his saintly image. Peter’s struggle centers on confession, forgiveness, and the harm caused when religious leaders value power and reputation over truth. A final sermon condemns homosexuals, and the crowd’s applause makes the Church look cruel and hypocritical. These ideas shape the final act, but the movie stays focused on sin, sexual abuse, and supernatural horror.
