Andrew Briggman is a young U.S. Army soldier sent to Afghanistan in 2009. His platoon leader, Sergeant Deeks, orders the men to hunt people who may have attacked them, but the unit begins killing Afghan civilians and hiding the truth. Andrew tries to obey his friends and leaders while his conscience tells him that the killings are wrong. The film is a tense and grim war drama about fear, loyalty, and moral pressure.
The story follows Andrew as he is pulled into a group that treats toughness and silence as proof of loyalty. Deeks uses praise, threats, and fake battle stories to make his soldiers follow him. Andrew’s father contacts Army investigators, but the report puts Andrew in danger and leaves him caught between guilt and fear. The film focuses on war crimes, military power, and the cost of obeying a cruel leader.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Kill Team.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is a mostly male U.S. Army platoon, with white and non-white soldiers in ordinary military roles. The film does not frame those choices as a diversity message or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Rayburn makes one dark race-based joke about a white man beating a helpless brown man. The line links the scene to a wider history of racial power. The film does not build a speech or repeated debate around that idea. The remaining talk centers on orders, loyalty, and war crimes.
22%
Identity-driven story themes
The platoon turns male brotherhood and warrior status into tests of loyalty. Deeks rewards men who act hard and punishes those who question him. Andrew is pressured to prove himself by fighting, killing, and staying silent. The story connects this group culture to murder and fear, but it stays tied to the specific war-crime case.
31%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows military leaders using rank, loyalty, and fear to protect unlawful killings. The Army and its reporting chain fail to stop the abuse before the damage spreads. The story treats macho warrior culture as part of the problem. Its critique stays tied to real Afghanistan war crimes and does not widen into an attack on Christianity, capitalism, or ordinary family life.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes names and dramatizes a real case, but it does not change a character’s race, gender, sexuality, or heroic role.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke backlash or complaint is documented in the checked coverage. Public comments mostly discuss the trailer, war-film comparisons, or the film’s quality.

Creator track record context
Dan Krauss’s cached record centers on war, military accountability, criminal justice, and humanitarian dilemmas. Sophie Holland’s cached record includes open diversity and inclusion advocacy in casting. The producers’ cached records show little or no activist or identity-politics work. Interviews about this film stress truth, moral choices, group conformity, and military abuse.
