Marie-Josèphe grows up in a French convent and does not know she is King Louis XIV’s secret daughter. The king fears death and captures a mermaid, hoping to take her life force during an eclipse so he can live forever. Marie is brought to the grand court at Versailles, bonds with the creature, and falls for the sea captain who caught her. The film is a light family fantasy about love, courage, and choosing what is right over power.
A normal viewer mostly sees a princess-style adventure with a mermaid, a romance, and a selfish king, not modern activist politics. The clearest soft signals are a bold young woman who defies her father’s plan and a forced marriage, plus a black servant friend (Magali) with one brief line about being taken from her family. Faith and the king’s soul matter a lot in the story, more than race or identity lectures. The movie plays like a simple fairy tale about kindness and standing up for a living creature, not a DEI campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The King's Daughter.
Woke representation / casting
Main leads fit a European court setting. Crystal Clarke’s Magali is a clear supporting black friend with one brief line about being torn from her family. Fan Bingbing as the CGI mermaid reflects China co-financing of a fantasy creature, not a race swap of a famous historical person. Diversity is present but secondary and not the film’s focus.
22%
Woke political dialogue
Talk is mostly about the king’s soul, whether the mermaid is one of God’s creatures, arranged marriage, and doing right. That is fairy-tale morality and faith talk, not modern activist DEI speech about race, gender systems, or identity.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Marie is a strong, kind heroine who defies her father, rejects a forced match, and treats the mermaid as a person with a soul. That is classic girl-power adventure and compassion for a magical being. It is mild and story-driven, not a race, queer, or systemic-identity campaign.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Versailles looks vain and status-obsessed, and the king is selfish. Nuns scold swimming as sinful. Still, the priest and faith are mostly serious and good, and the bad doctor stands for cruel “science,” not a modern attack on Western life, Christianity, or traditional family as systems of oppression.
16%
Woke character or canon changes

0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No meaningful right-leaning or anti-woke backlash treats this title as woke propaganda. Coverage stayed on quality, delays, and effects.

Creator track record context
Director McNamara scores very low on activist history. Co-writer Schamus has a high progressive and LGBTQ-linked profile. Other listed writers and producers score near zero. The finished movie plays like McNamara family fantasy more than Schamus-style identity cinema, so the blended crew context is moderate, not high.
