The Last Duel is a historical movie set in medieval France. It tells the story of two men who fight to the death after a woman accuses one of them of attacking her. The movie shows the same events from three different points of view. The final part of the film focuses heavily on modern feminist ideas about consent, male power, and how hard it was for women to speak out in the past.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Last Duel.
Woke representation / casting
The movie features an entirely European cast that fits the historical 14th-century setting. It does not use diverse casting or modern identity-based quotas.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The movie contains dialogue that sounds very modern. Characters argue about consent and power in ways that feel like modern debates. A court scene includes the line "This is just science" to mock old beliefs, which feels out of place in a medieval setting.

Identity-driven story themes
The entire movie is built as a medieval version of the #MeToo movement. It frames the historical event around modern ideas of toxic masculinity, systemic patriarchy, and the struggle of women to be believed when reporting assault.

Western institutional / cultural critique
The film strongly attacks historical Western institutions. It portrays the Catholic Church, the court system, and traditional marriage as corrupt tools. It shows these institutions as systems created by men to oppress women and protect abusers.

Woke character or canon changes
The movie changes real history and the source book to make the story less complicated. In real history, the truth of the assault is still debated by experts. The film removes all doubt and changes the historical figures to fit a modern political message.
