The Lego Batman Movie follows a rich, lonely Bruce Wayne who protects Gotham City while pretending he does not need anyone. The Joker starts a huge plan to take over the city after Batman refuses to call him his greatest enemy. Bruce also adopts the eager orphan Dick Grayson, who becomes Robin, while new police commissioner Barbara Gordon pushes Batman to work with the police. The film uses fast Lego action, silly jokes, old Batman references, and a warm family story.
The movie gives Black or brown Barbara Gordon a major role as a smart police commissioner who becomes Batgirl and helps lead the final fight. It repeats jokes about Robin having two dads because Bruce Wayne and Batman seem like separate people. The Joker uses breakup-style language about his bond with Batman, but neither man is shown as gay and they never have a romance. These points sit inside the larger lesson that family, teamwork, and emotional openness can help a proud loner change.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Lego Batman Movie.
Woke representation / casting
The movie gives Black Barbara Gordon a major role as Gotham's police commissioner and Batgirl. The Gordon family is shown as black or brown, unlike the usual white comic version. Barbara is highly trained, smart, and able to lead the final battle. Rosario Dawson called Barbara's patient and collaborative strength empowering, but the film does not make her race a speech topic or market around diversity.
36%
Woke political dialogue
Barbara says Gotham does not need an unsupervised adult man beating up poor people as its only answer to crime. She argues for a police force that can work without Batman. The ending says that saving the city takes a village, not one hero. These lines give the film a mild message about community and public services, but they are brief jokes rather than a political speech.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie makes chosen family the answer to Batman's loneliness. Robin repeatedly jokes that he has two dads because Bruce Wayne and Batman appear to share custody of him. Joker also treats his bond with Batman like a one-sided relationship that needs a breakup. The film never makes either man gay, so this remains light queer-coded humor inside a wider family story.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie makes fun of Batman's macho pride, lone-wolf image, and refusal to share control. Barbara challenges his private crime fighting and proves that she and the team can save people. Batman must admit that his fear of family and his need to look strong hurt the people around him. This gives a mild critique of macho behavior and of a hero acting outside the law.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
The film changes the Gordon family's look and gives Barbara the commissioner job, but it does not state that either change serves an identity or DEI message. The other changes mainly come from the Lego comedy setting.
15%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few anti-woke critics called the film “pro-gay propaganda” because Robin jokes about having two dads. Some also read the Joker and Batman's breakup-style talk as sexual or gay subtext. The Independent reported these complaints and noted that the movie has no romantic relationship between the two men. X research found only a handful of small accounts, with no boycott, review-bombing drive, or lasting campaign.
18%
Creator track record context
The stored creator scores are low for Chris McKay, most writers, and most producers. William Moulton Marston has a higher stored score because of early feminist ideas, but he is a historical Batman creator rather than a modern activist voice. Film interviews focus on Batman's loneliness, family, teamwork, and comedy. This context adds only a weak signal.
