Richard Brown is a tired English professor at a private New England college. He learns that he has stage-four lung cancer and may have only months to live. He hides the news from his wife and daughter while he drinks, uses drugs, has sex, and breaks the rules at work. The dark comedy follows his reckless attempt to face death, repair old relationships, and decide how to spend his last days.
The film includes modern sexual identity. Richard’s daughter Olivia says that she is a lesbian, and her mother first calls the news a phase while Richard accepts her. Richard also has a short same-sex sexual encounter with a male student while he tries new experiences. These moments are visible and tied to his rejection of old limits, but the main story stays focused on cancer, marriage, family, freedom, and mortality. The film does not build its plot around a political campaign or a diversity message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Professor.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film has a mostly white main cast and some varied supporting roles. The film does not present its casting as a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Olivia tells her parents that she is a lesbian. The characters talk about death, sex, teaching, and breaking rules. Richard’s rude comments about a feminist student mock her rather than promoting woke political dialogue.
20%
Identity-driven story themes
Olivia tells her parents that she is a lesbian. Her mother calls it a phase, while Richard accepts her and later supports her. Richard also has a brief same-sex encounter with a male student while he tries new experiences. These scenes make LGBTQ identity visible, but cancer and family repair remain the main story.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows Richard rejecting college rules, marriage habits, and social restraint after his diagnosis. The dean’s bad conduct is a personal plot problem. The story does not turn these events into a modern activist attack on Western culture, men, family, or religion.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about Richard Brown. It does not change an established character, canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No clear anti-woke or DEI backlash appears in the supplied X pass or the main news coverage. Public criticism focused on weak writing, Johnny Depp’s performance, sexual behavior, and the film’s treatment of women.
0%
Creator track record context
Wayne Roberts has mainly made bleak character dramas about outsiders and sexuality. His past work includes queer characters, but there is little record of DEI activism or public identity campaigning. The available records for the producers and casting directors also show little political activity. This gives the film only a weak creator track record context.
