The film follows Maksym Berkut, a young hunter from a small Carpathian mountain village. His father Zakhar and mother Rada help lead the villagers, who live by hunting and farming until Burunda Khan sends a large Mongol army west. Maksym and his brother must seek help from Tugar Vovk, a proud local lord who controls a nearby settlement. Maksym falls in love with Tugar's daughter Myroslava, and their romance becomes tied to the fight for the valley. The story mixes family drama, romance, village loyalty, and rough medieval battles.
Myroslava is a strong and active young woman who argues with her father, chooses her own path, uses a bow, and stays involved in the fighting. Rada also has a serious voice in village decisions, so women are shown as more than background figures. The movie gives these women courage and freedom, but it does not make men foolish or useless. Maksym, Zakhar, and the other male fighters still drive most of the action and carry the main burden of defending the village. The female strength theme is visible and repeated, but the movie remains mainly a medieval story about family, local loyalty, and resistance to invasion rather than a modern identity message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Rising Hawk.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast mixes Ukrainian, American, British, Kazakh, and Mongolian performers for an international production. The movie does not present this mix as a diversity campaign or identity statement. Myroslava's strong role is a story choice, not a repeated quota-style casting pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film uses words about freedom, unity, and defending the village. Those lines support the medieval fight against invasion, not modern identity, DEI, gender, or activist politics. No recurring speech pushes a current social cause.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Myroslava argues with her father and chooses her own path. She uses a bow and remains active during the fighting instead of serving only as a love interest. Rada also has a voice in village decisions. The main story still follows Maksym, Zakhar, and the community's fight against the Mongols, so the female strength theme is visible but not dominant.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a proud lord clashing with villagers, but it does not attack modern institutions or traditional family and gender roles. The conflict stays within the medieval struggle over land, class, and survival.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film keeps the established names and basic identities from Ivan Franko's novella. The changes focus on which character leads the action and on the battle scenes, not on identity.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke posts or campaign. Other reviews and audience comments focus on weak writing, historical accuracy, foreign casting, and production quality rather than claims that the film pushes DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Director Akhtem Seitablaiev has a strong public record of work about Crimean Tatar history, persecution, occupation, and Ukrainian cultural survival. His background adds a minority and national identity context to this project. Public profiles for John Wynn, the writers, and most producers show little modern DEI or activist activity. Casting director Venus Kanani has a representation-focused record, but no title-specific diversity message was found.
