Woke political dialogue
The movie is set in 1977. Still, the characters talk about things that sound like modern political debates. They discuss cutting money for colleges. They talk about rich bosses using the government to hurt workers. They complain about people being called bad names for their beliefs. The language is historical but feels like a modern left-wing critique of conservative ideas.
35%
Identity-driven story themes
This film has strong gay and feminist themes. The safehouse has a young gay person who ran away from a mean family. In one very weird scene, a bloody human leg runs around and kicks gay men at a beach. This scene is meant to show how gay people were hurt during this time. Because the movie clearly highlights queer and feminist ideas, this score is higher.
70%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie criticizes traditional authority and capitalism. The bad guy is a rich business owner who pays killers to hunt the main character. The film takes the old style of Brazilian family homes and turns it upside down. Instead of a strong father in charge, a kind group of female and socialist rebels runs the safehouse. It attacks capitalism and traditional family roles.
