The Souvenir follows Julie, a shy young woman studying film in London in the early 1980s. She comes from a wealthy family and wants to make films, but she is still unsure what she has to say. Julie falls for Anthony, an older man who seems smart and charming but hides a serious heroin problem. Their romance slowly pulls her away from school, friends, and her own judgment, giving the film a quiet and painful tone.
The film puts a young woman’s inner life and growth at the center, and it shows her trying to find her voice as an artist. Julie also wants to make a film about working-class people in Sunderland, even though her wealthy life gives her little knowledge of that world. Her teachers question whether she understands the people she wants to portray, so the story raises class, privilege, and who gets to tell a story. The film treats Julie as unsure and flawed, and it focuses on memory, addiction, and a damaging relationship.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Souvenir.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast matches the film’s white British, upper-middle-class 1980s setting. The female lead and her mother fit the family story and are not presented as a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Julie’s teachers question her plan to make a film about working-class people in Sunderland while she lives on family money. Anthony also mocks her wish to show life as it is. These brief class and privilege exchanges do not become repeated modern identity or DEI speeches.
15%
Identity-driven story themes
The film centers Julie as a young woman trying to become a filmmaker while learning how a powerful older man can shape her choices. The story repeatedly shows her being pressured, doubting herself, and slowly finding her own voice. Hogg described the project as a story about a woman artist rather than another male-centered artist story. Julie is vulnerable and often wrong, so the film does not present her as an unstoppable hero.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film questions Julie’s plan to make a story about working-class people while she lives on family money. Her teachers point out that she does not know the world she wants to show. Anthony’s lies, control, and drug use also show one form of damaging male power. The story does not attack Christianity, family life, or Western institutions in a broad way.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is a personal story, not an adaptation of a known character or historical event. It does not change an established character’s race, gender, sexuality, or role.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Available complaints focus on the slow pace, privileged setting, and unusual style. No clear anti-woke complaints about DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging were found.
0%
Creator track record context
Joanna Hogg has a moderate woke and activist track record. Her work often centers women’s inner lives, female artists, class, and unequal relationships. She has spoken about feminism, sexism, and the lack of women directors. Her style remains personal and quiet rather than openly political.
