Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Thursday Murder Club.
Woke representation / casting
Naomi Ackie is cast as PC Donna De Freitas (who had a Portuguese background in the book), and Joseph Marcell plays Father Mackie. The Egyptian-British character Ibrahim Arif (Ben Kingsley) is portrayed as a closeted gay man, whose sexuality is confirmed in a sweet scene showing a hidden photo of his male partner.
55%
Woke political dialogue
The script includes light dialogue highlighting how female police officers like Donna are pushed aside and underestimated by their bumbling male bosses. There are also brief references criticizing how immigrants are treated in post-Brexit Britain. While present, these political elements are integrated into the cozy mystery and do not overwhelm the film's lighter tone.

Identity-driven story themes
The story highlights female skill over bumbling male figures, with Elizabeth and Donna driving the investigation while the senior male detective is portrayed as lazy and incompetent. Most notably, Ibrahim's closeted gay identity is confirmed at the end, showing the historical struggles of gay people.
62%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film critiques traditional groups like the police, depicting them as lazy, disorganized, and historically sexist. A past murderer got away with his crime because the biased department believed him over a female detective. The main business developer is also shown as a greedy, wealthy villain trying to tear down a church graveyard for profit, framing business interests as corrupt.

Woke character or canon changes
Several changes were made to the characters from the book. Donna De Freitas is played by a black actress, changing her Portuguese-British background. Also, Ibrahim's closeted gay backstory, which does not appear until the fourth book in the novel series, is brought to the ending of this first movie to show his gay identity early.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Online backlash was small but present. Some viewers accused the film of pushing "Woke DEI" agendas on social media. These complaints focused on the race-swapping of characters, the depiction of greedy white businessmen as the main villains, and subplots about immigrants. These complaints mostly stayed on the internet.
