Stockton Rush leads this documentary as the founder of OceanGate and the pilot of its Titan submersible. The film follows his plan to take paying passengers more than two miles below the North Atlantic to see the Titanic wreck. Former workers, experts, journalists, and families describe the warnings that came before the 2023 dive, when Titan imploded and killed all five people inside. The tone is grim and tense, with a strong focus on pride, risk, and the cost of ignoring good advice.
The film includes one clear identity-marketing detail when OceanGate plans to present a young female pilot as the company’s public face because the choice would play well in the media. That moment is brief and does not shape the main story. The main message concerns failed tests, weak checks, pressure to make money, and a leader who treats criticism as a personal attack. The documentary also asks who should have stopped the mission before unsafe choices reached paying passengers.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster.
Woke representation / casting
The film shows OceanGate planning to make Emily Hammermeister a young female lead pilot because the choice would play well in the media. OceanGate also wanted her to be the company’s public face. This is one clear identity-marketing moment, but it is a small part of a documentary about engineering failures.
22%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film discusses safety rules, inspections, whistleblower protection, and company decisions. It does not use modern identity or activist political language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows failed tests, ignored warnings, and the deaths of five people. It does not make race, sex, sexuality, or group identity a main theme.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film criticizes Stockton Rush, OceanGate, weak safety checks, and the choice to work around rules. Its focus stays on the disaster and personal pride instead of a broad attack on Western culture, religion, family, or social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film retells a real disaster with interviews, company footage, and hearing material. It does not change the people or event to make an identity or DEI point.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Web reviews and viewer comments focused on the engineering, deaths, and Stockton Rush rather than woke or DEI claims.

Creator track record context
Mark Monroe has no clear activist or identity-driven record. Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan have made many social-issue films, and Amy Herdy has worked on sexual-assault and #MeToo documentaries. Several other producers have links to LGBTQ history or women’s issues, while most of the team has little or no such record. This gives the team some activist context, but the film itself stays focused on engineering, safety, and accountability.
