Troop Zero follows Christmas Flint, a lonely girl in rural Georgia in 1977 who dreams of sending her voice into space. After NASA announces that a winning Birdie Scout troop will be recorded for the Voyager Golden Record, Christmas forms her own team of school misfits. Her friends include Joseph, who is teased for acting unlike other boys, Hell-No, Smash, and Anne-Claire, a girl with one eye who trusts Jesus. Christmas also asks her father's sharp legal assistant, Rayleen, to lead them. The movie uses jokes, songs, grief, and a warm underdog story as the troop works toward a local jamboree.
The movie gives clear weight to self-acceptance and to pushing back against fixed gender roles. The Birdie leader teaches girls that scouting prepares them to become caring wives, while Christmas and Rayleen choose their own goals. Joseph earns a hairstyling badge and stays with the troop even when other children call him a girl-boy. The movie also presents a racially mixed group of children in a 1977 rural Georgia school. These ideas matter throughout the friendships and competition, but the space dream, Christmas's grief, and the contest remain the main story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Troop Zero.
Woke representation / casting
The main troop is an intentionally mixed group of white and black children, a gender-nonconforming boy, and a one-eyed Christian girl. The cast makes these differences part of the team's identity as outsiders. The directors said the 1977 school would not really have been racially mixed, which confirms a deliberate story choice. The pattern is strong in the main group, but the movie does not make every major role an identity symbol.
53%
Woke political dialogue
Christmas says the troop rules do not require girls only, so Joseph can join. Ramsey says the rules do not say the troop mother must be female, and he proudly takes that role. Rayleen says her life is her own and announces that she is going to law school. Other children call Joseph “girl-boy,” so gender arguments return across the movie.
47%
Identity-driven story themes
The troop is built from children who are rejected for being strange, poor, disabled, or outside normal gender rules. Joseph's feminine style and his place in a girls' troop remain a clear part of the story. Christmas leads the team, and Rayleen leaves a life shaped by pleasing a man so she can pursue law school. The film makes self-acceptance and chosen friendship the answer to these pressures. The space contest and Christmas's grief still carry the main plot.
55%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Birdie Scout system treats girls as future wives and labels outsiders as unworthy. Miss Massey uses beauty, manners, and old gender rules to control the troop. The film sides with children who resist those rules and mocks the idea that a boy or unusual girl should stay out. The story does not attack Christianity, capitalism, or Western society as a whole, so the critique stays limited.
32%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie adapts Lucy Alibar's own play, but its reported adaptation changes concern the point of view and the move from adult performers to real children. No identity-related rewrite of an established character or real person is reported.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account called the movie “woke BS” and linked that view to Jim Gaffigan. A conservative family review also warned about light gender-politics content around Joseph's hairstyling badge. The available reaction is tiny and does not show a boycott, review-bomb campaign, or major news fight. The complaints are real but fringe.

Creator track record context
Bert and Bertie have a moderate record of inclusive work, including a series with prominent LGBTQ elements. Lucy Alibar has a progressive record that includes gender-identity advocacy. Viola Davis has a strong public record of diversity and LGBTQ inclusion work and is a producer here. Most other listed producers have little or mild activist context. This gives supporting context for the movie's identity themes, but it does not prove that every scene is activist.
