XOXO follows Ethan Shaw, a young DJ whose homemade song suddenly becomes popular online. He gets a last-minute chance to play at a huge electronic dance festival, but he must reach the stage while his friend and manager Tariq struggles with family duties. Krystal travels to the festival to meet a man she met online and hopes to find true love. Shannie and Ray face a hard talk about their future before she moves away, while an older record-store owner tries to settle an old score. The film uses bright lights, loud music, drug use, jokes, and fast cuts to create a wild and hopeful night.
The film shows a mixed crowd at a modern American rave, and a brief background moment includes women kissing. The main romantic stories follow Krystal and Ethan, and Shannie and Ray, so the same-sex moment does not lead a main character arc. Tariq's story centers on the pull between his own dreams and his Lebanese father's wish that he stay with the family business. The story keeps returning to self-love, taking a chance, following a dream, and the idea that music can connect strangers.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for XOXO.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses a mixed modern festival cast, but the story does not present the casting as a diversity message. Its character choices do not make race, gender, religion, or disability a main point.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about music, romance, family duties, drugs, and taking chances. The motivational lines do not push modern identity, DEI, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
A brief background moment shows women kissing at the rave. Krystal also learns to turn her attention away from an online date and toward self-respect. The main story follows music, romance, family duty, and personal dreams. Sexual identity does not control a lead character's journey.
12%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Tariq's father pushes him toward work in the family business, and Neil resents the music business that once rejected him. The film treats these as personal conflicts and does not turn them into modern activist criticism of men, religion, capitalism, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. XOXO is an original story about a fictional music festival, so it does not change an established character, canon, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research found no anti-woke complaints, boycott, or review-bombing. Other reviews focused on plot quality, rave culture, drugs, and style rather than claims about DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Writer Dylan Meyer has a strong record of women-centered stories and queer-related work in the stored creator context. Producer Sarah Hyland's context centers on survivor support, while director Christopher Louie's context centers on rave and music culture. The mixed record adds some woke context around the project, but it is not a shared or strongly activist profile.
