Laura Franco is a quiet stage actress recovering from cancer surgery when her boyfriend, Jacob, leaves her. She returns to her childhood home in New York and finds a rough but charming monster living in the closet. The monster gives her a place to stay and pushes her back toward the musical she helped create. The film mixes romance, comedy, horror, and songs, then turns darker as Laura’s anger grows.
The film makes female anger and standing up for yourself its main idea. Laura is urged to stop being quiet, challenge a man who used her work, and embrace a darker side of herself. The play inside the film says society puts a heavy burden on women, and the story mocks Jacob as a man who talks about supporting women while treating Laura badly. These ideas return through the rehearsal scenes, Laura’s outburst, and the violent ending, so the message is central rather than a small side point.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Your Monster.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast is mixed, but the film does not make race, sexuality, disability, or diversity a message. The women-led cast fits a modern New York theater story and does not show a clear representation-first pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The rehearsal speech says society places a heavy burden on women and praises women for overcoming oppression. The show repeats this idea in songs about rules for girls and feminine behavior. Laura also accuses Jacob of expecting her to cook and do chores while he treats his art as more important. These lines appear in several theater scenes and the main confrontation, so the message is noticeable but not constant.
42%
Identity-driven story themes
The story is built around Laura learning to embrace the anger she was taught to hide. Monster makes her louder, more aggressive, and willing to fight for her work. The film treats self-assertion and female anger as a path to power. The ex’s fake feminist play and his treatment of Laura make male control part of the message. This theme drives her romance, career struggle, and ending.
65%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film criticizes male entitlement in a theater world where Jacob takes Laura’s work, replaces her, and expects her support. The play inside the film says society holds women back and teaches girls to obey rules. The story mocks Jacob’s public talk about women because he acts selfishly in private. The critique targets gender roles and male behavior, but it does not attack religion, capitalism, or Western institutions broadly.
49%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses original characters and is based on Lindy’s own short film. It does not change an established character’s race, sex, sexuality, or hero role.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few negative reviews objected to the film’s feminist undertones and its women-centered musical. One review called the play a cringey feminist empowerment project, while another said the feminist packaging was too strong. Reddit reaction was mostly positive, and the supplied X pass found no anti-woke campaign or review-bombing. The backlash remains fringe.

Creator track record context
Caroline Lindy’s past work centers women’s emotional lives, sexuality, and anger. Her title interviews describe the monster as a way to release and embrace female rage. Several producers also have a record of backing women-led stories. The group has little public partisan activism, so the context is clearly women-centered but not extreme.
