Your Place or Mine is a light 2023 romantic comedy set between Los Angeles and New York. Debbie is a careful single mother who has put her own goals aside while raising her son Jack. Peter is her wealthy, restless best friend, and the two have stayed close since a one-night stand twenty years earlier. When Debbie travels to New York for an accounting course, Peter watches Jack in Los Angeles, and the home swap forces both friends to face feelings and dreams they have avoided.
The clearest woke element is a mild female empowerment thread. Debbie is shown as more than a mother because she returns to school, reconnects with her interest in book editing, and chooses a fuller life. The movie also includes a lesbian friend and several diverse supporting characters, but those roles stay in the side plot and are not presented as a political lesson. The story does not use political speeches, institutional attacks, or a culture-war conflict, so its woke material stays secondary to the romance, family growth, and message about taking a chance.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Your Place or Mine.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The movie has diverse supporting characters, including a black editor, an Asian American ex-girlfriend, and a lesbian friend. Their identities are not used as a casting message, and the modern Los Angeles and New York setting makes this mix ordinary.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Debbie and Peter talk about romance, work, parenting, and personal fears. No character gives a recurring speech about elections, activism, race, gender politics, or social change.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Debbie puts her own goals and love life aside while raising Jack. She returns to school and reconnects with her wish to work in book editing. The story treats her choice to seek work, romance, and a fuller life in her 40s as a positive step. The film also includes Alicia, a lesbian friend, but her identity stays in a small supporting role. This creates a recurring female empowerment thread with a minor LGBTQ+ element, not a central identity story.
30%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie treats Debbie’s strict motherhood and habit of putting herself last as problems that she should change. The story supports her return to school, work, and romance after years of self-denial. This is a small challenge to a traditional mother role, but the movie does not attack men, religion, capitalism, family life, or Western institutions.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story about two friends. It does not change a known character, canon, or historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public complaints focused on weak chemistry, a thin plot, and awkward filmmaking. No major report or audience discussion claimed that the movie pushes woke, DEI, or identity politics.

Creator track record context
Aline Brosh McKenna’s cached creator score is 55, and her work is known for women-centered stories and feminist themes. Reese Witherspoon’s cached score is 34, and her company promotes stories led by women. The other listed producers have lower cached scores and no strong activist record. This gives the movie a noticeable female-centered creator context, but not a hardline political one.
