Scarlett Johansson

Personal context

Summary

Scarlett Johansson is an actor, producer, and director known for Lost in Translation, Marriage Story, Jojo Rabbit, and Marvel’s Black Widow. Her work spans intimate relationship dramas, comedy, science fiction, and franchise films; her 2025 directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, follows a woman rebuilding her life after a loss. Johansson has repeatedly supported Planned Parenthood and women’s reproductive rights, including speaking at the 2017 Women’s March, and has campaigned for Democratic candidates Barack Obama and Elizabeth Warren. In a high-profile trans-representation debate, she withdrew from playing a transgender man and said the casting criticism had prompted a larger conversation about inclusion; she also publicly urged Egypt to release detained human rights defenders. Her public record does not show sustained race-focused advocacy or a formal DEI role.
