2018–2019 · Based on 2 seasons through July 12, 2019 ·
Aja and Krel are royal alien teenagers who escape their planet after a military coup. They reach Earth with their bodyguard, Vex, and hide in the town of Arcadia. They pretend to be human students while bounty hunters and enemy soldiers search for them. The show combines comedy, space battles, family problems, and friendship.
The alien story clearly compares their lives with the lives of immigrants and refugees. The show gives important roles to a Latino-coded alien, a female warrior, and an older male protector. Season 2 shows humans trying to remove every alien from Earth, which makes the message stronger. Two teenage girls share a brief kiss, but queer themes do not drive the main story. These ideas matter because they shape the conflict, while the show remains a family science fiction adventure about survival, belonging, and acceptance.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for 3Below: Tales of Arcadia.
Woke representation / casting
The show gives major roles to Aja, a female alien warrior, and Krel, a Latino-coded alien in human disguise. The story says the aliens receive these forms because people will ignore them. A.C. Bradley said the team wanted to focus on Latino and female heroes. The choices fit the story, but the team also stated its diversity goal openly.
40%
Woke political dialogue
The show directly discusses how aliens are hunted and treated as threats. Colonel Kubritz says that she wants to cleanse Earth of all aliens. The dialogue presents this treatment as wrong and connects the heroes with immigration concerns. The message appears often, but the story remains a family science fiction adventure.
32%
Identity-driven story themes
The main story follows displaced aliens who hide from authorities and try to belong on Earth. The show repeatedly compares their situation with the lives of immigrants and refugees. Season 2 strengthens this theme through the anti-alien campaign and the fight against General Morando. The story also stresses acceptance across species and cultures.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show presents human military forces as dangerous because they target aliens without knowing the truth. Colonel Kubritz leads a campaign based on fear of outsiders. The story treats that campaign as cruel and unjust. The criticism is clear, but it targets fictional anti-alien forces instead of many Western institutions.
36%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The score does not apply because the source identifies no relevant character or canon changes.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Small conservative accounts called the lesbian kiss and immigration message woke or forced. Some viewers complained about the franchise's later male pregnancy plot, but that plot mainly comes from a different later title. The reaction remained limited to small accounts and secondhand reports. No major anti-woke campaign or review bombing was found.
12%
Creator track record context
Guillermo del Toro has a cached woke score of 41/100 and often supports outsider and immigrant stories. Marc Guggenheim has a cached woke score of 42/100 and has used progressive themes in earlier work. Their backgrounds support the show's clear focus on immigration and diversity.
