2025– · Based on 1 season, 9 episodes through July 31, 2026 ·
Adults follows five friends in their twenties who share Samir’s family house in Queens, New York. Samir, Billie, Issa, Anton, and Paul Baker struggle with jobs, money, health bills, dating, sex, and the basic tasks of adult life. Samir tries to keep the house running, while each friend makes poor choices and then asks the group for help. The show uses crude, fast comedy and turns small problems into wild plans, but it also shows how loyal friends can be when life becomes hard.
Several stories use modern identity and social issues as comic material. The opening follows Issa trying to answer a man who exposes himself on the subway, and Samir spends time checking whether past sexual encounters crossed consent lines. Another episode centers on the group caring for a teenage girl who travels for an abortion, while jokes about feminism, sexual labels, and police ideas appear around the plot. The season also shows Anton as gay and makes Paul Baker’s open sexuality and same-sex wedding a major late-season turn, so these themes are clear but still sit inside a messy friendship comedy.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Adults.
Woke representation / casting
Adults places three queer or sexually open characters among its five main friends. Anton is gay, Paul Baker says he is sexually fluid, and Billie has sex with a married couple that includes a woman. These choices stay in major stories and lead to the finale marriage and kiss. The show does not present the casting as a diversity campaign, but the high queer share is easy to notice.
44%
Woke political dialogue
Adults gives several characters direct lines about modern social issues. Issa calls her subway act a political statement about objectification, and Samir asks past partners whether he crossed consent lines. The friends joke about feminism, sexual labels, and defunding the police. The lines appear in a few episodes, but the show usually makes the speakers look confused or selfish instead of giving them a clear speech.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
Adults returns to sex, consent, and personal identity across the season. The first story deals with workplace abuse and whether past sex was consent. Another major story follows the friends caring for a teen who travels for an abortion. The finale turns Paul Baker and Anton’s marriage and kiss into a major cliffhanger, while the group treats flexible sexuality as normal. These themes matter in several episodes, but the main story remains a friendship comedy.
55%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Adults includes brief modern complaints about work, health care, and public safety. The pilot questions how people handle sexual abuse and consent, while later stories show medical debt and a “defund the police” joke. The friends usually use these issues for selfish or foolish plans. The show does not build a strong attack on men, family, faith, or Western institutions.
22%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Adults is an original FX comedy and does not adapt a book, old show, or real event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Adults received a few small anti-woke complaints. X users called it a “woke” knockoff and objected to its supposedly “problematic” jokes. One Reddit commenter called the show “so woke” and dreadful, while another viewer who usually dislikes overly woke shows still liked it. No large campaign or major news backlash was found, so the complaints are real but fringe.
24%
Creator track record context
Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw are comedy writers with little public activist history. Most of the creative team also has comedy careers without a strong activist record. Rob Rosell has the clearest related history because he worked on Woke and a New Girl story about police brutality and racism. Jason Woliner has some political satire, but the wider group does not show a steady identity-first agenda.
