Chad Powers follows Russ Holliday, a former college quarterback whose career ended after a famous mistake and a cruel outburst. Eight years later, Russ uses his father’s makeup skills to hide behind a wig and fake face, then joins the weak South Georgia Catfish as Chad Powers. He must win a starting job while hiding his name from the coaches and players. The show mixes loud sports jokes with a darker story about shame, lies, family, friendship, and a possible second chance.
The show includes Danny, a gay mascot who helps Russ build and keep his disguise. Ricky is a female assistant coach whose football ideas are first brushed aside, while Tricia is a woman with real power over the team. Russ’s changing self and Ricky’s advice that he can choose who he becomes give the story a mild identity-driven message. The main lesson still comes from a selfish male athlete facing the damage he caused and learning that a new name cannot erase the past.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Chad Powers.
Woke representation / casting
The show places Ricky in a visible assistant-coach role and gives Tricia control as the team’s booster chair. Danny is a gay mascot who becomes Russ’s main helper and shares much of the season’s screen time. Coach Byrd is also a black assistant coach in the team’s leadership group. This is a noticeable identity mix, but the modern college setting makes the casting plausible and the marketing does not present it as a diversity campaign.
18%
Woke political dialogue
The show directly discusses gender roles when Russ says a woman on the sideline may not deserve her job. Ricky answers by insisting that she is a coach, and her football idea later works. The show also uses lines about choosing who you become. These lines are brief and personal, with no party politics or activist speech.
16%
Identity-driven story themes
The series makes self-made identity a repeated theme because Russ hides behind a new name and slowly treats Chad as a second self. Ricky tells him that he decides who he wants to be, while the story asks whether a fake nice persona can change the real man. The message concerns personal redemption, not race, sex, or a wider activist cause. This makes the woke identity-driven story theme mild.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show repeatedly presents male pride and male failure as problems. Russ is an arrogant sports star who loses work because of his temper, while Coach Hudson lets football damage his marriage and his bond with Ricky. Ricky is called a nepo baby and is dismissed when she offers a play, but her plan helps win the game. The story criticizes these men’s choices inside a sports comedy, but it does not attack Western institutions as a whole.
27%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series expands Eli Manning’s short online character into a new story. It does not change a known character or historical event to make an identity point.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A small X sample included posts calling the show’s female boss and gay mascot woke-style choices. Another post complained that the gay character felt forced, while one small right-leaning account defended the show as not woke. The complaints had little reach and did not form a sustained campaign.
12%
Creator track record context
Michael Waldron and Glen Powell have low recorded scores of 21 and 11. Most of the writers, directors, and producers have low or modest scores. Jordan Mendoza has a stronger record tied to LGBTQ+ and diversity work, while Luvh Rakhe has some inclusion and labor advocacy context. This gives mild supporting context, not strong proof of an activist show.
