2019–2020 · Based on 1 season, 16 episodes through February 16, 2020 · · Korean
Crash Landing on You follows Yoon Se-ri, a rich South Korean businesswoman who is blown into North Korea during a paragliding accident. North Korean army captain Ri Jeong-hyeok hides her in his village and tries to get her home safely. Their love grows while corrupt officers, family enemies, and the armed border keep them apart. The show mixes romance, comedy, danger, and tearful family drama across North Korea, South Korea, and Switzerland.
The show gives Se-ri a central role as a bold company boss who speaks her mind and often takes charge, while Ri remains a skilled and protective soldier. The story repeatedly treats ordinary North Koreans as people with humor, loyalty, family ties, and private hopes instead of showing them only as enemies. It also shows black markets, poverty, fear, prison threats, and state control, so the human side does not erase the harsh setting. The season keeps the romance at the center and ends with the couple meeting once a year in neutral Switzerland because the border still separates them.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Crash Landing on You.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is Korean in a story about modern Korea, North Korea, and the shared Korean setting. The female company boss role fits Se-ri’s story and is not presented as a diversity campaign.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The show uses lines about capitalism, propaganda, and reunification to explain the divided Korean setting. The dialogue does not turn those lines into modern DEI, gender-rights, or activist speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Se-ri leads the story as a rich, outspoken company boss who makes major choices and stays active in danger. The romance repeatedly asks viewers to see ordinary North Koreans as people with family ties, humor, work, and loyalty instead of only as enemies. Ri remains skilled and protective, so the show does not make men broadly incompetent or treat women as the only capable group. These choices add a recurring gender and national identity angle, while the story keeps love and personal loyalty above political change.
30%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show criticizes a corrupt North Korean officer and greedy Korean business relatives. Those villains serve the plot and do not create a wider attack on Western institutions, Christianity, or traditional family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original fictional romance inspired by a reported boat incident. It does not change a known character, book, or historical person.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A conservative Christian Liberty Party complaint said the show made North Korean soldiers and villagers look too peaceful. The party said this could weaken public awareness of North Korea as an enemy and called the show propaganda. The complaint was a right-leaning political reaction, but it did not focus on DEI, race, sexuality, or gender politics. The complaint came from a small group, and no larger anti-woke campaign was reported.
12%
Creator track record context
Park Ji-eun has a repeated pattern of women-centered stories and capable female leads. Kim Hee-won has a similar pattern in later work, including stories about women and unequal power. Lee Jung-hyo and Jang Young-woo have no well-known activist or DEI public record. This mixed record gives moderate context, but it does not show that this series was made as an activist project.
