2020–2022 · Based on 3 seasons through November 24, 2022 ·
Staged follows David Tennant and Michael Sheen as exaggerated versions of themselves. The two actors are stuck at home after their West End play is stopped by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their director, Simon Evans, keeps trying to make them rehearse while family life, bad internet, boredom, and their large egos get in the way. The first season is warm lockdown comedy, while the later seasons follow a fight over an American remake and a failed Christmas project.
The main joke comes from two famous men acting childish and arguing over work, fame, and who matters more. Georgia Tennant and Anna Lundberg often steady the men and deal with the mess around them. The show also jokes about friendship, marriage, parenting, celebrity, and the fear of losing work. By season three, the story becomes a messy behind-the-scenes comedy about the show itself, but it still ends with the pair trying to save a performance.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Staged.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The central cast is mostly white British actors playing themselves or their real partners. The varied guest cast serves celebrity cameos, and the show does not frame casting as a diversity or identity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue jokes about lockdown rules, acting work, fame, family life, and travel limits. It does not push modern identity politics, DEI, or activist politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story focuses on friendship, family, work, celebrity, and actors trapped by lockdown. No recurring identity or representation storyline shapes the three seasons.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show makes fun of actors, agents, American television, and its own production. The jokes do not become a modern activist attack on Western institutions, family life, religion, or traditional social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show uses fictionalized versions of the real actors and a planned production of Pirandello’s play. It does not rewrite a known character or historical figure around identity.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reviewed coverage and public discussion focused on lockdown humor, celebrity chemistry, and the show's increasingly meta style. No specific anti-woke complaint about DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging was found.
0%
Creator track record context
David Tennant has a strong public record of LGBTQ+ and trans-rights support. Michael Sheen has a milder record of gender and community activism. Georgia Tennant has publicly backed transgender people. Simon Evans and most other producers have no notable identity-politics record, so this context mainly comes from three producers rather than the show's story.
