Bodkin follows Gilbert Power, an upbeat American true crime podcaster, as he travels to the made-up coastal town of Bodkin in West Cork. He works with Dove Maloney, a sharp Irish investigative reporter, and Emmy Sizergh, his eager young researcher. They reopen the case of three people who vanished during the town’s Samhain festival 25 years earlier. The mystery moves through secret families and smugglers before it reaches a convent and an illegal eel trade, while the show shifts between dry jokes, danger, and dark violence.
Most of the story examines truth, memory, and the harm that follows when people turn suffering into entertainment. Dove is a tough and troubled woman who challenges Gilbert’s friendly podcast style. Emmy grows from a nervous helper into a skilled investigator who saves people at the festival and wins a place on the Guardian investigations desk. Women drive much of the case, and a gay female mortician flirts with Dove, but these points stay inside a wider mystery about crime, family secrets, journalism, and the lies people tell themselves.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Bodkin.
Woke representation / casting
The show places Emmy, a British woman of color, in one of its three lead roles as a capable researcher. The small West Cork town is otherwise mostly white Irish, so her casting adds a visible diversity signal. The story also gives important work to several women and includes a black supporting character. The mix is noticeable, but it is not a repeated one-of-each lineup or a stated diversity campaign.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue covers crime, journalism, family secrets, and government corruption. It does not repeat a woke political or activist message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The show gives its two women leads much of the investigative work and lets Emmy grow from an eager assistant into a confident reporter. Emmy saves people at the festival and demands a place on the Guardian's investigations desk. The story rewards her push for a larger voice, while a gay female mortician appears in a small romantic side thread. These themes recur across the season but stay secondary to the mystery and its criticism of true-crime storytelling.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show exposes secrets in the police, the government, the convent, and the newspaper, but it treats them as parts of a crime story. It does not build a modern activist attack on Western institutions, traditional family life, or Christianity.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Bodkin is an original fictional show, and it does not rewrite an earlier character, story, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small right-leaning X accounts called Bodkin woke or tied it to a DEI agenda. Some posts said the Obama-produced show insulted Irish culture and pushed anti-white ideas. One viewer said the show had been called woke but defended it as enjoyable and not very woke. No large boycott, review-bombing push, or major high-reach campaign appeared. The complaints are fringe and do not prove that the show contains the claimed message.
12%
Creator track record context
Higher Ground producers Barack and Michelle Obama and Tonia Davis bring a clear progressive and diversity-focused context. Writer Ursula Rani Sarma has a stronger public record of supporting gender equality and ethnic diversity. Other key writers and directors have mixed or low public records, while Jez Scharf has no clear activist pattern. The background raises this context score, but it does not by itself show that Bodkin carries a strong woke message.
