2023 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through December 15, 2023 ·
Carol Kohl is a quiet 42-year-old woman who cannot join the rush to enjoy every wild dream before Earth is destroyed. A planet called Keppler will hit Earth in about seven months, and most people leave work to travel, party, or chase old goals. Carol instead finds comfort in a strange office called The Distraction, where workers do pointless tasks to avoid thinking about death. The season is slow, dark, funny, and sad as Carol learns to care about other people while the end draws near.
The clearest woke elements are the show's open view of unusual relationships and its repeated attack on empty corporate work. Carol's parents live in a loving three-person relationship with their male nurse, and the show returns to that relationship in family and cruise stories. Luis is openly gay, but the story treats his identity as normal instead of making it the main conflict. The office plot says that isolated work harms people and that friendship can break a system built on obedience, making anti-capitalist and community messages more noticeable than the identity material. These ideas support the story, but Carol's main journey is about loneliness, routine, family, and friendship rather than activist politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Carol & the End of the World.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast shows a normal modern American mix, including a white woman, a black woman, and a Latino man. The show does not make that mix a plot point or present it as a diversity campaign.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The show includes brief news reports about people leaving their jobs after the coming disaster. HR calls friendship a threat to the office and treats shared feelings as a problem. These lines create a mild anti-work and anti-capitalist message. The season does not build long political speeches around that idea.
16%
Identity-driven story themes
Carol's parents live in a loving three-person relationship with their male nurse. The show gives that relationship a full episode and returns to it during the cruise story and a later family scene. Luis is a gay man whose identity is treated as normal, while his main story concerns travel, loneliness, and friendship. These identity-driven story themes are clear but secondary to Carol's search for meaning.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Distraction keeps people doing office work even after money and normal business have lost their purpose. Workers do not know what they make, and HR calls friendship, names, and shared feelings threats to the system. Carol's memorial, desk decorations, lunch plan, and Applebee's gatherings slowly break that rule across the season. The story presents human community as better than isolated work, giving its anti-capitalist critique a recurring role.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original story, so it does not rework an established character, canon, or real event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The X reaction check found no anti-woke complaints, boycott talk, or review-bomb campaign. Web discussions mention the slow pace, boring sections, and nudity, but not woke or DEI messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
Dan Guterman is linked mainly to political satire, not strong activist work. Donick Cary made a documentary about native American sports mascots and publicly reconsidered past writing. The other listed writers and directors have mostly low or no activist records. This gives the team some social-issue context, but it does not show a strong team-wide pattern.
