2016 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through May 9, 2016 ·
Damien follows Damien Thorn, a 30-year-old war photographer who returns to New York after a strange event in Damascus. An old woman's words bring back memories from his childhood as people around him begin to die. Damien learns that he is the Antichrist and tries to decide whether he can fight his nature. Ann Rutledge, a woman who has watched over him for years, pushes him toward his dark purpose while a detective follows the trail of deaths. The season has a slow, grim, supernatural thriller tone with mystery, violence, and sudden horror.
The show gives the main group characters from different backgrounds, including Detective James Shay, a gay married man who raises an adopted son with his husband. The show treats this family as part of his home life, but it does not make his sexuality a main problem or a season-long cause of conflict. Damien also works beside a black journalist and a Lebanese friend, so identity is visible in the main group. The season's main themes are fate, evil, faith, war trauma, suicide, and the struggle to keep a human conscience, not current identity politics. These elements add a mild woke signal around representation, but they do not control the story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Damien.
Woke representation / casting
Damien has a white male lead, a black female journalist, a Lebanese male best friend, and a gay male detective with a husband and adopted son. These choices fit a present-day New York setting, and the story does not make the characters heroes because of their identities. Glen Mazzara publicly described the show as a diversity case study and said he wrote gender and ethnic backgrounds into the scripts. The repeated pattern and public framing support a moderate score.
35%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The show has no recurring woke political speeches. Its talk about war, veterans' care, the White House, and global power supports the supernatural plot rather than a present-day identity or activist message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
James Shay is a gay New York detective who lives with his husband and their adopted son. The show presents this family in a home scene as normal background to his police work. His sexuality is not a main conflict and does not drive the season's supernatural plot.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Armitage Global, the White House, the Vatican, and the police are tied to secret plans around Damien. The show uses those groups for a horror conspiracy and does not turn them into a repeated modern critique of gender, family, Christianity, or Western society.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show changes Damien's age, job, memory, and later history after the first Omen film. It does not make a race, gender, sexuality, or other identity change to an established character or real figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The reviewed reaction centers on slow pacing, weak writing, unclear story choices, low ratings, and cancellation. No meaningful anti-woke backlash about DEI, identity politics, or activist messaging was found.

Creator track record context
The stored creator summary gives Glen Mazzara a woke score of 53/100 and notes his work promoting inclusion in writers' rooms. He publicly described Damien as a diversity case study and said he wrote gender and ethnic backgrounds into the scripts. David Seltzer has a stored score of 24/100, so Mazzara's record is the stronger signal. This context supports a moderate score.
