2017–2019 · Based on 2 seasons through January 11, 2019 ·
Friends from College follows Ethan Turner, a writer in his late thirties who moves from Chicago to New York with his wife, Lisa. The move brings Ethan back to his old Harvard friends, including Sam, the married woman he has secretly slept with for 20 years. Lisa tries to build a law career and start a family while Ethan struggles with work, honesty, and growing up. The show uses dark, awkward comedy to show how old friends can act like foolish teenagers.
The main story is about friendship, marriage, cheating, money, work, and the pull of the past. Season one builds toward the affair being exposed and the group breaking apart. Season two follows the friends as they meet again for Max and Felix’s wedding, while Ethan and Sam try to become a real couple and Lisa begins a new life. Max and Felix’s gay relationship and wedding are a regular part of the story, but the show treats them as one part of a larger adult comedy. The show also jokes about male selfishness, female anger, and the limits of marriage.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Friends from College.
Woke representation / casting
Ethan is a black writer, and Marianne is an Asian actress in the main friend group. Max and Felix are a gay couple with major roles in both seasons. New York makes this cast mix believable, and the show does not sell it as a diversity campaign. The visible mix is a mild representation signal, not the main subject of the story.
22%
Woke political dialogue
One wedding scene has a character say that women should band together, but the line is a joke and ends there. The dialogue spends far more time on sex, marriage, work, and friendship than on current politics. No repeated activist or left-wing message shapes either season.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
Max and Felix build a serious gay relationship across both seasons. Their engagement and wedding shape much of season two, and the show treats their marriage as a normal part of adult life. Sam, Lisa, and Ethan also make major choices about sex, marriage, and family. These themes matter, but the main plot remains the group’s affairs, lies, and friendship.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Ethan and Nick repeatedly act selfishly toward women and treat relationships like games. Lisa holds a demanding law job and speaks openly about anger after the affair. The show jokes about male entitlement and the limits of marriage, but it does not build a wider attack on capitalism, religion, or Western institutions.
15%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original story about fictional Harvard friends, so it does not change established characters or historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public discussion focused on unlikeable characters, cheating, and the dark tone rather than claims of woke or DEI messaging. The separate X pass found no anti-woke complaints.
0%
Creator track record context
Nicholas Stoller has a visible queer-representation track record through Bros and public comments about bringing LGBTQ stories to wide audiences. Francesca Delbanco has no widely reported activist record. Writer Alexandra Rushfield has a strong feminist and representation-focused work history, while most other listed writers have mild or unclear signals. The title-related interviews present this show as a story about nostalgia and adult mistakes, so the creator context is moderate rather than central.
