2018 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through December 13, 2018 ·
Nightflyers follows Karl D’Branin, an astrophysicist who leads a team of scientists into deep space in 2093. Earth is sick and hard to live on, so Karl hopes an ancient alien race called the Volcryn can help save humanity. The crew boards a strange ship run by a hidden captain and a powerful computer. The mission quickly becomes a bloody, tense fight against fear, mind powers, grief, and forces that may not be human.
The show presents Lommie as gender-fluid and shows Melantha, a genetically enhanced woman, in a sexual relationship with Lommie. Their bond returns during the season and shapes trust, betrayal, and survival on the ship. The show puts these characters in important and highly capable roles. The other major ideas concern human change, dangerous technology, loss, and whether people should repair Earth or escape to new worlds.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Nightflyers.
Woke representation / casting
The main crew includes a black captain, a black genetically enhanced mission specialist, and a gender-fluid cyber technician. Melantha is one of the most capable people on the ship, and women hold several science and command jobs. The 2093 space setting makes a mixed crew believable, and Melantha's black identity follows Martin's novella. Turner-Smith still framed the cast as a step for race and diversity, so the visible pattern has a clear identity signal.
40%
Woke political dialogue
The show has brief dialogue about Earth becoming unsustainable and humanity acting like a virus that killed its host. The crew also debates whether people should build colonies or repair Earth. These lines give the season a mild environmental and anti-colonization message. The dialogue does not discuss current parties, race politics, capitalism, or gender politics.
12%
Identity-driven story themes
The show presents Lommie as gender-fluid and treats that identity as part of the future. Melantha is sexually fluid and has a visible sexual relationship with Lommie. Their bond returns in several episodes and affects trust, jealousy, and survival. Queer identity is important to this subplot, but it is not the main subject of the mission.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The season does not attack Christianity, family life, patriarchy, capitalism, or Western institutions as a modern activist problem. The damaged Earth and colony debate frame the mission, while the main conflict comes from telepathy, grief, artificial intelligence, and survival.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
The show changes Lommie from the novella's female cyberneticist into a gender-fluid character. The pilot script and series material identify Lommie that way. The show keeps Melantha and Lommie's same-sex encounter from the source, so that relationship is not a new canon change. The identity change is clear but limited to one major character.
28%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small X accounts called the show an “affirmative-action diversity stunt.” Other posts called the lesbian scene a “gay agenda” or politically correct overreach. The accounts had little reach and no major news story grew from the complaints. Most wider reaction focused on the show's quality and cancellation.
12%
Creator track record context
The credited creators have a mixed public record. Terry Matalas and MJ Bassett have the strongest supporting links to inclusion or identity themes, with scores of 54 and 58. Jeff Buhler, most writers, most directors, and most producers have low or modest scores. This mix supports a low to moderate creator track record score.
