October Faction

Geoff is openly gay, and the story treats family acceptance as a clear good. Phillip hides his sexuality, bullies Geoff, comes out, and dates him. The show compares the treatment of warlocks, vampires, and werewolves with the way real people are demonized because of race or sexuality. Viv’s assault and the school’s refusal to believe her add a female empowerment theme. These ideas return across the school plot and the warlock conflict.

Presidio is an international group that kills and experiments on monsters. The season shows the group as cruel and willing to erase a whole town. The story makes that violence part of a wider message about powerful institutions treating outsiders as less than human. Viv rejects Presidio’s promise that studying monster DNA will bring peace. The critique stays inside a fantasy and school story.

Some Reddit and user-review posts accused the show of pushing political or woke ideas. Those posts objected to the gay storyline, racial themes, and school drama. Other viewers praised the cast and wanted another season. Mainstream coverage mostly criticized weak writing and pacing instead. The complaints are scattered and mostly come from individual users.

Damian Kindler and most writers have no documented activist or identity-first record. Melissa Blake has publicly supported gender and racial diversity in writers’ rooms. Megan Follows and Mina Shum have stronger links to female or race and identity themes. Most of the creative team remains focused on genre television. The creator context gives moderate support but does not prove an activist purpose.
