2017–2019 · Based on 2 seasons through November 7, 2019 ·
The End of the F***ing World is a dark teen crime romance about James and Alyssa. They run away together and face danger, murder, and deep personal trauma. Season 1 follows their runaway road-trip story with invented detective strands and clearer consent scenes. Season 2 is more original and somber. It centers on Bonnie’s revenge, the fallout after a shooting, and the long aftershock of abuse for the main characters.
The biggest audience-visible progressive notes are consent lessons and a hard focus on male sexual entitlement and predation. Alyssa can stop a hookup mid-way, and the show says that if people want to do things to you, you do not have to let them. Sexual violence and its damage are hard to miss across both seasons. Key supporting roles bring noticeable diversity without selling the show as a diversity project. A closeted gay predator appears as a side beat, but the series is not queer-centered. Police are mostly competent, and family trouble stays personal rather than a broad attack on the West or the church.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The End of the F***ing World.
Woke representation / casting
The show keeps white leads who match the comic’s James and Alyssa in a modern UK setting. Key supporting and Season 2 roles bring noticeable diversity, including detective Teri Darego and Bonnie. The series is not sold as a diversity project. It also does not race-swap the central pair.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Clear consent lines stand out, such as Alyssa stopping a hookup and the idea that you do not have to let people do things to you. Press treated those moments as lessons. The show does not fill scenes with constant activist speeches about race, identity systems, or party politics.
26%
Identity-driven story themes
The main story is a dark teen crime romance about trauma, attachment, and whether James is a psychopath. Across both seasons, sexual violence, consent, and male predators are hard to miss. Season 2 dwells on the damage abusers leave behind. A closeted gay predator appears as a side beat without making the series about queer identity.
40%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The show criticizes male sexual entitlement and brittle masculinity through predators and related behavior. Family problems stay personal. Police are largely competent and sympathetic. It is not a broad attack on Christianity, the West, or capitalism.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. UK setting, expanded cops, Topher, and Season 2’s Bonnie arc are ordinary adaptation and sequel choices.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No meaningful anti-woke, anti-DEI, or agenda backlash was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Charlie Covell wrote all sixteen episodes and has a documented queer and non-binary identity plus later identity-forward work. Directors and producers on this title score lower for activist framing. Casting leadership is noted for diversity-forward branding. The raised context mainly comes from Covell’s full control of the scripts, not from selling this show as activism.
