2019 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through May 10, 2019 ·
The Society follows Allie Pressman after every adult and child in her wealthy Connecticut town disappears. The remaining high school students return from a trip to find West Ham sealed off from the outside world. Allie helps build a government while the group faces hunger, fear, murder, and a growing fight for control. The tone mixes teen romance and mystery with violence, grief, and tense survival drama.
The show gives strong story weight to female leadership, since Cassandra and then Allie guide the town while several boys turn to threats and force. The plot also includes a repeated conflict over sexism, male entitlement, and a group of boys who use men's-rights language against the girls. Sam is a deaf gay teen, and his romance with Grizz becomes an important emotional story beside Becca's pregnancy. The students also debate socialism, shared resources, guns, punishment, and democracy, so the show carries clear political and identity-driven themes without making them the only part of the mystery.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Society.
Woke representation / casting
Cassandra leads the first response to the crisis, and Allie becomes the town's main ruler. Helena holds another visible leadership role through the church and the group's moral debates. The show repeatedly places women in control while several boys use force, threats, or poor judgment. The diverse cast fits a modern Connecticut town, so the score rests mainly on the repeated female-power pattern.
38%
Woke political dialogue
The students repeatedly debate socialism, gun ownership, criminal justice, shared resources, punishment, and democracy. Allie and her council argue over how much power the government should hold. The Guard uses current language about male power and women's rights during its challenge to the government. The show presents competing systems instead of giving every issue one simple answer.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
Female leadership and the treatment of women shape the main power struggle. The Guard grows from male anger, and its members use threats and men's-rights talk against women. Sam's gay identity and his romance with Grizz run through several episodes and affect the final part of the season. The season treats these issues as important parts of building the new society, but survival and mystery remain the main plot.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The story questions whether inherited wealth and old social rules deserve trust. The boys' Guard uses male entitlement and violence to challenge a female-led government. The show links that power grab to toxic masculinity and warns that democratic rules can be lost. The story also questions policing, punishment, gun use, and adult systems, but it does not make every Western institution a target.
46%
Woke character or canon changes
The show is a new story inspired by Lord of the Flies rather than a direct remake. The source book follows stranded boys, while this version places girls and boys together and puts Cassandra and Allie at the center. The creators said that adding women to the setup changes the story and helps explore gender and male power. The loose connection to the book keeps this from being a high score.
30%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Reddit commenter called the show progressive or woke for showing men as losers, violent, or dumb and women as smart and capable. Other commenters disputed that reading, and the discussion did not become a larger campaign. The supplied X research found no anti-woke reaction or boycott.
8%
Creator track record context
Christopher Keyser has a mild political background from speechwriting for a Democratic presidential campaign. Most of the other writers and directors have low or mild records with no strong activist public work. Megan Griffiths is the main exception because her work often centers feminist themes and harm against women. The overall team gives modest support for a woke reading.
