2020–2022 · Based on 2 seasons through November 21, 2022 ·
The Vow follows former NXIVM leaders Mark Vicente and Sarah Edmondson as they leave a self-help group built around Keith Raniere. The story moves through New York, Vancouver, Mexico, and courtrooms as members search for proof, safety, and justice. NXIVM promises personal growth, but its rules lead to control, blackmail, branding, sexual abuse, and prison. The tone starts calm and curious, then becomes tense, sad, and disturbing.
The show repeatedly examines female empowerment language that hides control over women. It shows how Raniere’s ideas about men and women support a chain of masters and slaves, while female leaders also hurt other women. The later episodes focus on survivor testimony and the harm caused by male power, sexual coercion, and forced loyalty. These themes are central to the crime story, but the series does not turn them into a broad campaign about race, sexuality, or modern party politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Vow.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The show follows real people in a documentary and does not use casting or identity-first marketing to shape its on-screen group.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Members discuss a supposed feminist reason for creating DOS, linking it to anger about misogyny around the 2016 election. The show also includes Raniere’s lessons about men, women, and gender roles. These talks appear as evidence of NXIVM’s control and are not presented as a wider political program.
22%
Identity-driven story themes
Women are repeatedly promised empowerment while DOS uses obedience, blackmail, branding, starvation, and sexual control. The series follows women who leave and shows how female leaders also harmed other women. The story treats these events as abuse inside a cult rather than as a broad message about all men or women.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The series shows Raniere’s claim that men and women have fixed roles, and it links those lessons to his control of women. The show presents male sexual power and entitlement as causes of harm. This criticism stays inside NXIVM and does not attack ordinary Western family, church, or business life.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series records a real criminal case and does not rewrite an established character, source story, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke campaign or specific complaints. Other audience criticism focused on editing, omissions, and possible sympathy for NXIVM.
