A Simple Favor follows Stephanie Smothers, a widowed single mother who runs a small parenting vlog in a wealthy Connecticut suburb. She becomes close to Emily Nelson, a stylish public relations boss whose son goes to school with Stephanie’s son. When Emily asks Stephanie to pick up her boy and then vanishes, Stephanie starts looking for answers. The search leads to murder, fake names, old family crimes, and a fight over money and control. The film mixes sharp jokes, sex, violence, and many twists.
The film gives its two female leads most of the power and treats the pressure to look like a perfect mother as something to mock. Emily speaks about her bisexual past, and she briefly kisses Stephanie during their intense friendship. The school group also includes Darren, an openly gay father. These identity elements are easy to see, but they do not control the whole plot because the main story stays focused on lies, crime, grief, and family damage.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for A Simple Favor.
Woke representation / casting
The story centers on two white women in the main roles. The supporting cast includes Henry Golding as Emily’s husband, a black detective, an Asian boy, an Indian school parent, and a gay father. Interview coverage described Feig’s casting as inclusive and color blind. The pattern is visible, but diversity stays secondary to the mystery and does not drive the characters.
24%
Woke political dialogue
Emily calls constant apologizing a “fucked-up female habit” and tells Stephanie to stop saying sorry. The advice presents female assertiveness as better than timid politeness. Stephanie later uses direct threats, public action, and her vlog to take control of the case. The film has no long speeches about parties, laws, or current events.
27%
Identity-driven story themes
Emily describes a threesome with her husband’s female teaching assistant, which gives her a clear bisexual or sexually open identity. Emily and Stephanie share a brief make-out scene that adds romantic tension to their friendship. Darren is an openly gay father who appears with the school parents. These moments are easy for viewers to notice, but the murder plot and family secrets remain the main focus.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film mocks the pressure on women to look like perfect mothers. The story contrasts Stephanie’s work at home with Emily’s high-powered job and treats both women as more than their family roles. The women control the investigation and most of the major choices, while the men often react to them. The critique stays personal and comic, with no attack on capitalism, religion, or modern conservative politics.

Creator track record context
Paul Feig repeatedly puts strong women at the center of comedy and action, and the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot made his female-led approach part of a public debate. Jessica Sharzer is a queer writer whose earlier work includes stories with LGBTQ+ and gender themes. Darcey Bell and the other listed crew have little known activist or identity-focused history in the supplied context. This film uses Feig’s female-led style and Sharzer’s queer context, but its plot is still a crime story rather than a political lesson.
