Coco is a colorful animated movie about a young Mexican boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming a musician. He accidentally travels to the magical Land of the Dead, where he must find his ancestors to help him return home. The movie places a strong, highly visible focus on cultural identity and Mexican heritage by using an entirely Latino voice cast. Some viewers may notice subtle themes about resisting strict family expectations to follow personal dreams.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Coco.
Woke representation / casting
The voice cast is entirely Latino, which is fully appropriate for the film's Mexican setting and characters. However, Disney and Pixar heavily prioritized identity-conscious casting and marketed it as a milestone for representation to counteract earlier public relations issues. Because it remains organic to the story world, it avoids looking like an unforced, mismatched quota.
15%
Woke political dialogue
The film contains no activist buzzwords, progressive lectures, or modern political dialogue. The dialogue remains strictly focused on family relations, emotional bonds, and traditional storytelling.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie heavily focuses on Mexican cultural heritage and the Day of the Dead, utilizing outside cultural consultants to guide the presentation. However, the core narrative itself remains a classic, traditional family story about ancestral honor, family unity, and pursuing dreams, avoiding modern progressive or activist-driven social justice themes.
5%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film does not critique Western cultural institutions, traditional gender roles, or family structures. The matriarchal family structure is ultimately shown in a very warm, supportive light, and the conflict is resolved by restoring family unity rather than breaking away from tradition.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Backlash from conservative or anti-woke audiences is virtually nonexistent. Most viewers across the political spectrum embraced the film's traditional emphasis on family loyalty, respect for elders, and absence of modern political activism.
0%
Creator track record context
The key creative leads have strong activist track records. Co-director and writer Adrian Molina is openly gay and champions representation, while director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson have both publicly advocated for progressive representation. However, several other contributing writers and crew members maintain entirely non-activist, professional profiles.
