In a near-future world, Iris joins her boyfriend Josh and several friends for a weekend getaway at a secluded lakeside estate. Iris acts like a perfect, devoted partner at first. After a violent incident, major secrets surface about who Iris really is and how technology controls people in the group.
The movie focuses on a controlling boyfriend who programs his attractive female companion robot for obedience, sex, and loyalty, then uses her in a crime plot. Iris discovers the truth, raises her own intelligence, and fights back for freedom in a story of abuse and payback. A gay male couple forms a visible part of the friend group, with one also revealed as a companion robot in a loving but tragic relationship. Supporting roles include some ethnic diversity. Reviews often note the take on toxic male behavior and objectification, with the lead woman gaining power. The director calls it mainly a relationship story about escaping a bad dynamic and self-discovery, mixed with horror and dark humor. Critics liked the twists and cast performances. Public debate stayed light, with little backlash treating it as activist messaging. Some progressive coverage highlighted feminist angles around control and empowerment.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Companion.
Woke representation / casting
Supporting gay couple (Harvey Guillén as Eli and Lukas Gage as Patrick) in prominent friend-group roles with dedicated romance, emotional backstory, and tragedy (gay couple as the only healthy relationship). Megan Suri plays a key scheming friend. Main leads are a conventional white male owner and white female-coded robot that fits the “perfect companion” premise without visible quota signaling or story-world mismatch.
35%
Woke political dialogue
Iris confronts Josh about his manipulation, control, delusions, and objectification in pointed scenes, including personal insults during her awakening. Some lines land as thematic statements on power and entitlement. Delivered as character-driven conflict and dark humor rather than long activist speeches or institutional lectures.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
Central arc shows a programmed female companion gaining sentience and autonomy against her male owner’s abuse and plans. Story uses the robot premise as metaphor for toxic relationships, gaslighting, and breaking free. Includes a visible gay robot-human relationship. Reviews frequently describe it as commentary on toxic masculinity and objectification of women; the empowerment and revenge elements are audience-visible and prominent.
62%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Satirizes male entitlement, “nice guy” self-image, loneliness-driven purchase of perfect partners, and emotional disconnection from technology. Touches incel-adjacent attitudes and how humans become monstrous. Stays mostly personal and relationship-focused with genre satire rather than broad attacks on capitalism, patriarchy as system, or core Western institutions.

0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Little to no prominent anti-woke or right-leaning complaints in coverage or social reaction that treat the film as pushing woke, DEI, or identity politics. Reception centered on entertainment value and plot. Sparse online mentions exist but remain marginal.

Creator track record context
Drew Hancock shows no activist or identity-driven patterns in his career or statements about this project; he stresses story, toxic relationships, and fun genre mix. Some producers carry higher cached scores from prior feminist or representation-focused credits, but this title’s execution and marketing align with low-key, character-driven horror-thriller goals.
