Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Echo Valley.
Woke representation / casting
This movie has multiple prominent lesbian characters. The main character, Kate, left her husband for her female partner, Patty. Her close friend, Leslie, is also a lesbian with a black partner. Because it features several queer relationships, it gets extra points in this category. The rest of the cast features famous stars like Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore in a standard modern setting.
45%
Woke political dialogue
The characters do not give preachy political speeches or use activist words. They talk in a natural way about their lives, families, and past struggles. The dialogue stays focused on the dramatic thriller plot rather than trying to lecture the audience about social issues.

Identity-driven story themes
While the main plot is about a mother hiding a crime, Kate’s major motivation and sadness come from losing her wife, Patty. The film emphasizes Kate's choice to leave her husband for a woman. This strong focus on lesbian relationships and grief adds a noticeable identity element to the story's themes.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film criticizes traditional family structures. It shows Kate's marriage to a man as a bad, unhappy choice compared to her same-sex marriage. Additionally, every male character is bad—one is a cold ex-husband, one is a toxic boyfriend, and another is an evil drug dealer—while only the women are shown as supportive and strong.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original screenplay written by Brad Ingelsby, meaning there are no pre-existing characters, source material, or historical events to modify.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some internet users left comments on social media complaining about the movie's lesbian themes and its negative portrayal of men. However, because the movie was a quiet streaming release on Apple TV+ and not a massive box office hit, it did not face any big or organized boycotts.
20%
Creator track record context
Most of the filmmakers have a low history of political work. However, two of the producers, Erika Olde and Nicole Jordan-Webber, have strong track records of making female-led and LGBTQ+ movies, which matches the identity themes seen in this film.
