Far from the Tree is a seven-minute animated short about a young raccoon exploring a beach in the Pacific Northwest. A scared parent tries to keep the child away from danger, but the child wants to see the world. The child gets hurt after wandering too far, and the parent reacts with anger as well as fear. Years later, the child becomes a parent and faces the same problem with a new baby. The short feels quiet, tense, sad, and hopeful.
The story follows the raccoon through two stages of family life, first as a curious child and later as a protective parent. The grown raccoon repeats the harsh lesson it learned until it sees the fear behind that behavior. The ending shows the raccoon choosing patience and wonder instead of passing the hurt to its child. The main message is that parents can protect children while still letting them explore, and that a family can change an old pattern.
