Masaru Kato is a 17-year-old student who dies while trying to stop a knife attack in a subway station. A black sphere called Gantz brings him back and sends him to Osaka with other dead people. They must kill waves of strange creatures in two hours or lose their lives again. The film moves quickly between grim horror, loud action, and dark jokes, while its detailed CGI gives the city and monsters a game-like look.
Kato fights because his younger brother is waiting for him at home, and this duty makes him kinder than many of the other players. He joins Reika, the elderly Suzuki, the hostile Nishi, and Anzu Yamasaki, a mother who wants to return to her young son. The group faces rival hunters, giant Japanese folklore monsters, and the changing monster Nurarihyon while a score system offers weapons, freedom, or a chance to bring back the dead. The story values courage, protecting strangers, and choosing family over escape, but it also uses heavy bloodshed, tight battle suits, sexual jokes, and female bodies as part of its shock style.
