Batman is pulled from Gotham into feudal Japan when Gorilla Grodd’s time machine breaks loose. His enemies have become warlords, and the Joker is trying to unite the country under his rule. Batman joins Catwoman, Alfred, Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin, and a local ninja clan to stop the war and find a way home. The movie is loud, fast, and playful, with samurai fights, moving castles, giant robots, and a giant bat-shaped warrior.
Batman starts with modern machines, but the Batmobile and his other tools fail in the old world. He grows by training with the ninja clan and trusting his skills, his family, and new allies. Catwoman stays a clever fighter and a key partner, while Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy keep their familiar villain roles. The story treats Japan as a stage for a wild clash between comic-book heroes, samurai legends, theater, ink art, and giant-mech action.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Batman Ninja.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Local ninjas and samurai are Japanese because the story is set in feudal Japan. The film does not use a mixed identity-focused cast or a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Characters discuss war, power, loyalty, and survival. Catwoman makes a brief sexual joke before fighting Harley Quinn, but the line does not promote a modern identity or activist idea.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Batman learns to trust his skills and his allies after losing his machines. The film centers on family loyalty, rivalry, Japanese genre style, and comic-book spectacle, not identity politics or gender-role messaging.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The villains act as feudal warlords who fight for power and control. The story does not turn that conflict into a modern attack on Western institutions, family life, religion, or traditional social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film gives Batman and his villains ninja, samurai, and feudal-lord versions. These are setting and genre changes, while their race, gender, sexuality, and basic hero or villain roles stay the same.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke complaints about the 2018 film. Wider fan complaints focused on confusing writing, pacing, extreme anime style, and sexualized designs. Conservative praise that called the film fun or not woke is approval, not backlash.
0%
Creator track record context
Most key creators have no public activist record. Leo Chu and Eric Garcia have worked on representation-focused projects such as Supah Ninjas and Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion. George Pérez had a left-leaning political action record outside this film. The Batman Ninja interviews focus on anime style, the Japanese setting, and Batman’s tools, so the creator context is a mild background signal.
