Jessie Burlingame travels with her husband, Gerald, to a remote lake house in Maine to repair their unhappy marriage. Gerald handcuffs Jessie to the bed during a sex game, but he dies from a heart attack when she tells him to stop. Jessie stays trapped beside his body while thirst, fear, a hungry dog, and a strange figure make her doubt what is real. The dark story moves between survival horror, painful memories, and visions inside Jessie's mind.
Jessie learns that her father abused her as a child and that she has carried the shame for years. The film also shows Gerald using sex, money, and fear to control her when she no longer agrees to his game. Jessie must face both men in her memories before she can escape and rebuild her life. Her final victory presents a woman rejecting male control, but the message stays tied to one survivor's personal horror rather than a wider political campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Gerald's Game.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Casting is entirely natural and matches the source novel's white middle-class American characters and 1990s setting with zero audience-visible forced diversity, race/gender swaps, signaling, or mismatches.

Identity-driven story themes
Jessie's survival is built around her life as a woman controlled by men. The film links Gerald's forced sex game with her father's abuse and her long silence. Jessie escapes by rejecting the shame and fear that kept her obedient, then faces the men as smaller than they seemed. The story presents female survival and male abuse clearly, but it stays inside one woman's personal trauma instead of making a broad political argument.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Gerald treats Jessie's refusal as part of the game, and the film shows his male entitlement as dangerous. Jessie's father also uses trust and family power to silence her after abusing her. Flanagan said the Moonlight Man represents the male perversion Jessie has faced and a larger problem in men. The film attacks those acts by specific men, but it does not blame courts, religion, capitalism, or Western society as a whole.
26%
Woke character or canon changes
The film changes King's book ending in two visible ways. Jessie gives the Moonlight Man a calm verbal defeat instead of spitting in his face, and she writes to herself instead of to Ruth. Flanagan linked the new ending to male abuse and Jessie's personal growth. This is a small identity-focused shift, while the main plot and characters remain faithful.

Creator track record context
Mike Flanagan's supplied creator score is 25/100, and his work is mainly character-based horror with some later social themes. Stephen King's supplied score is 34/100 because of his liberal politics, but his fiction is not built around modern identity politics. Jeff Howard's supplied score is 8/100 with no noted activist pattern. This gives the film mild creator track record context rather than a strong activist signal.
