Nancy Vandergroot teaches home economics and lives with her husband, Fred, and their son, Harry, in Holland, Michigan, in 2000. The town celebrates its Dutch roots with tulips, windmills, costumes, and a large parade. Nancy thinks Fred is having an affair because his work trips do not make sense. She asks her fellow teacher Dave Delgado to help her follow Fred, and the search turns into a violent mystery. The film uses bright colors, strange dreams, nervous humor, and bloody danger to make the perfect town feel unreal.
The film gives its main attention to a woman who feels bored, unseen, and trapped by the picture-perfect life expected of a wife. Nancy wants to be noticed as a person, not only as a mother and homemaker, and she begins an affair with Dave while chasing proof against Fred. Fred's polite public image hides control, abuse, and a secret life as a killer, so the story treats the perfect husband and the safe American home as false covers. Dave also faces one ugly racist attack, but the film drops that part quickly instead of making it a lasting identity story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Holland.
Woke representation / casting
The film places a Mexican teacher in the main group and casts a black boy as the son of two white parents. Dave is Nancy's main partner in the investigation, and Harry is part of the central family. The story gives no clear family backstory that explains Harry's racial difference. The visible choices create a modest representation signal, but the film does not build an ensemble around diversity.
30%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters do not discuss DEI, current politics, activism, or left-wing ideas. A racist attack appears, but it is not a political debate.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Nancy feels trapped by the perfect wife and homemaker role built into her home and town. The film repeatedly shows her boredom, sexual frustration, and need to be seen as her own person. Nancy kills Fred after he threatens her and Harry, which makes her final act a violent escape from his control. Dave's brief racist attack adds identity material, but the film drops that thread instead of building a larger race or diversity message.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows the white-picket-fence American dream as a cover for fear, boredom, and control. Fred's old-fashioned husband role hides abuse and violence behind polite manners. The town's perfect public image makes local tradition feel closed, and one racist attack makes Dave look like an outsider. The film does not connect these ideas to current politics, so the critique stays moderate.
34%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Holland is an original thriller, not an adaptation of known characters or events. No canon change drives the story.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account called the film state-sponsored propaganda because it makes a close Dutch-American town look secretly evil and not diverse. Another small No Woke account defended real Holland, Michigan, but did not make a clear wider DEI claim. These posts had very little reach and did not produce a boycott, review bomb, or repeated race or gender complaint. Mainstream coverage focused on weak twists and tone, so the anti-woke backlash remains fringe.

Creator track record context
Mimi Cave's Fresh explored gender, abuse, and women's fears through a female perspective. Nicole Kidman's public work supports women's safety and women-led film projects, and she described Holland as empowering in release coverage. Francine Maisler, Molly Rose, and Per Saari have some links to varied or women-centered projects, while the wider team has little public political activism. This record gives the movie mild supporting context, not a strong creator-led signal.
