Honey O’Donahue is a small-town private investigator in Bakersfield, California. She looks into the suspicious death of a woman who had planned to hire her, and more deaths soon point toward the Four-Way Temple. The church leader, Reverend Drew, runs a drug trade while using sex and religion to control troubled followers. Honey also deals with a missing niece and a fast romance with police officer MG Falcone. The movie uses dry jokes, crime, sex, and sudden violence in a strange, sun-baked crime story.
Honey’s lesbian identity drives the movie from its first scenes, and the story gives most of its romantic and sexual attention to women. Honey repeatedly rejects men who ignore her when she says she likes girls, while MG becomes her lover and possible partner. The movie turns the usual male detective role into a stylish, fearless woman and treats queer life as normal at the center of the story. It also mocks a crooked church leader, male entitlement, and a pro-Trump bumper sticker, then replaces it with a message saying that women vote. These ideas are clear and repeated, but the messy mystery and dark comedy keep the movie from becoming a direct political speech.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Honey Don't!.
Woke representation / casting
Honey is a lesbian woman placed in the classic male private-eye role. MG is a female police officer and Honey’s main romantic match. The film also gives clear screen time to queer side characters, including a gay client. Interviews openly describe changing noir’s gender rules and putting queer characters at the center. The identity choices are central and repeated, not background details.
72%
Woke political dialogue
The film shows one clear political message when Honey covers a pro-Trump bumper sticker with a women’s voting message. The moment supports the movie’s pro-women and anti-Republican tone. The story has no long political debate or repeated policy speeches. The signal is brief, so it is a minor part of the movie.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Honey’s lesbian identity drives her dating life, her responses to men, and the main romantic subplot. Honey and MG are treated as the center of the story, while men who ignore Honey’s wishes are jokes or threats. The film changes the usual male detective setup into a queer female-led story. Repeated sex scenes, lesbian flirting, and direct lines about liking girls make the identity focus hard to miss. These themes are central to the movie, not a side detail.
88%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Four-Way Temple is a church cult whose pastor uses religion to control and sexually exploit vulnerable women. The film presents several men as fools, threats, or people who ignore Honey’s clear boundaries. Honey also replaces a pro-Trump bumper sticker with a women’s voting message. These ideas create a recurring critique of male entitlement, religious abuse, and conservative symbols. The movie does not build a broad argument about all churches or Western society.
48%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original crime story, not an adaptation of a known character or real event. It makes no established character or canon change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One major review called the movie’s lesbian focus and women’s political joke smug and overly progressive. A small audience review called the film an LGBT political statement and objected to the repeated lesbian sex. The X search found no anti-woke reaction, boycott, or organized complaint. The evidence is limited and mixed, so this is a low score.

Creator track record context
Tricia Cooke has an openly queer public identity and a record of queer film work, including Drive-Away Dolls. Ethan Coen has no clear public pattern of activist or DEI-focused work. Interviews for this movie say the writers wanted to change noir’s gender rules and fill the story with queerness. Cooke’s past and the current film point in the same direction, but Coen’s wider record keeps this from being a top-range score.
