Sam Greenfield is an 18-year-old who just left foster care. She has the worst luck of anyone. When she follows a talking black cat through a portal, she finds the Land of Luck, where magical creatures make good and bad luck for Earth. She teams up with the cat, Bob, to help her young friend Hazel get a forever family. The tone is bright, silly, and warm, like a kid-friendly adventure about friendship and hope.
This movie is mostly about luck, kindness, and chosen family. Viewers mainly see a clumsy girl try to help a little kid get adopted, learn that both good and bad luck matter, and find people who stick by her. There is a light “strong women in charge” touch: a female dragon runs Good Luck, and a tough woman leads security. The cast includes people of different backgrounds in big voice roles. Those notes stay soft and easy to miss if you are watching for the jokes and magic. Normal viewers would mostly notice the foster-care heart and the luck factory, not heavy social-politics preaching.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Luck.
Woke representation / casting
Asian-American lead voice Eva Noblezada as Sam; multiethnic side cast (including Whoopi Goldberg as security boss Captain and Lil Rel Howery). Fantasy land shows strong female bosses (Babe the dragon CEO, Captain). Diversity is visible in big roles but not sold as the main point; ethnicity is not the plot engine.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Almost no political talk. Lines stay on luck, kindness, and helping friends. A light “powerful lady” vibe from Babe (intimidating “ladies of stature”) is soft girl-power flavor, not activist speeches.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
Story engine is foster care, found family, and learning that bad luck helps people grow. Female hero and female authority figures appear, but race, gender ideology, and identity politics do not drive the plot.
15%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Foster care is personal hard luck, not a modern activist attack on Western systems. The film rejects a world with only forced “good luck.” No serious anti-capitalist, anti-faith, or anti-tradition campaign.
8%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No major anti-woke wave about the movie’s content. Main uproar was Lasseter’s hiring. Only thin fringe “woke” labels; not a clear public fight over DEI or identity messaging.
5%
Creator track record context
Team is mostly family-animation craft people with low cached scores. Mild context only: Lasseter once backed more female/ethnic characters; Murray had soft empowerment notes on earlier work. No strong activist pattern tied to this film.
