Monster Trucks is a family action comedy about high schooler Tripp Coley in North Dakota. He builds a junkyard truck and meets Creech, an oil-eating creature freed by Terravex Oil fracking. Creech powers the truck as they outrun company mercenaries, free Creech’s parents, and expose the CEO’s cover-up. The tone is a retro kid-and-creature adventure like E.T. with trucks. It is not built around identity politics.
The story centers on friendship, father abandonment, small-town escape, and reuniting Creech’s family. A light protect-the-monsters-from-oil-harm thread appears, but it plays as classic kids adventure rather than race, gender, or queer politics. There is no LGBTQ content and no activist identity dialogue. A kind Black paraplegic junkyard mentor is a supporting cast choice, not a diversity campaign. The oil company is a generic corrupt-corp villain in a family film.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Monster Trucks.
Woke representation / casting
Leads are mostly white in a North Dakota setting. Danny Glover plays a kind black paraplegic junkyard mentor as support, not a savior leader. Jane Levy is a traditional smart love interest, not a girlboss. Casting was not sold as a diversity statement.
10%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film has no identity, DEI, race, gender, or LGBTQ activist talk. Bad-guy lines stay about protecting the company and covering things up.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story is about friendship, a missing dad, leaving a small town, and saving Creech’s family. A light protect-the-creatures-from-oil-harm idea stays classic kids adventure. It is not race, gender, or queer identity politics.
5%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Terravex is a bad oil company that fracks, captures creatures, plans to poison tunnels, and covers it up until the CEO is arrested. That is mild corrupt-company villainy in a family film. It does not attack Western culture, faith, family, or masculinity overall.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original toy-style idea from a Paramount exec’s young son. It is not a rewrite of old characters, canon, or history for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. There was no real anti-woke or anti-DEI fight in news or on X. People talked about cost, delays, creature redesign, and the four-year-old origin story instead.
0%
Creator track record context
Key creatives score low on activism history. Interviews push fun Amblin action and bonding, not politics. Wedge said he wanted plain fun when politics came up.
