Mothers' Instinct is a 1960s thriller about Alice and Celine, two housewives who live next door with their husbands and young sons. The women share a close friendship until Celine's son Max falls from a balcony and dies while Alice tries to reach him. Grief turns into blame, fear, and a battle over Alice's son Theo. The film has a tense, dark, and highly dramatic tone as each woman questions what the other is planning.
The film shows the limits of the 1960s housewife role through Alice's wish to return to reporting and her husband's belief that she does not need a job. Simon later uses her mental health fears to threaten commitment, which gives the story a mild critique of male control and old family roles. These ideas stay tied to the thriller's personal conflict. The main focus remains grief, motherhood, guilt, paranoia, and revenge.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Mothers' Instinct.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film centers on two white families in a 1960s American suburb, which fits the story world. The movie does not frame the casting as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film has brief period talk about the president, the Soviets, and the space race. It does not use that talk to push current political or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes motherhood and a woman's place in the home central to the conflict. Alice wants to return to reporting, while Celine's grief is tied to losing her role as a mother. The story shows men controlling women's choices and treating a wife's distress as a reason to remove her freedom. These are mild gender-role themes, but the movie keeps them inside a personal thriller instead of a wider identity-politics message.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Alice wanting to return to her reporting job while Simon says she does not need to work. Simon later says he should have Alice committed when her suspicions grow. The story presents the old housewife role and male control of a wife's choices as harmful pressures. The critique stays tied to the 1960s setting and the private family conflict rather than a broad modern political campaign.
24%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is a remake of the Belgian film Duelles and is based on Barbara Abel's novel. No identity-driven change to an established character, canon, or real historical event is part of the film.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke complaints were found in the available X or web reaction. Public discussion mainly covers the acting, style, pacing, plot logic, and ending.
0%
Creator track record context
The director and writers have low stored context scores and no strong public record of activist work. Hathaway and Chastain have public gender-equality work and produce female-led projects. Carmichael has a similar focus on women in film, while Kaufman has worked on identity-focused projects. This raises the context score mildly, but the film itself has no strong activist framing.
