Alex Mosher is a Brooklyn boy who loves writing scary stories, but he feels ashamed after his classmates reject him. He enters a strange apartment in his New York building and finds himself trapped by Natacha, a witch who wants a new story every night. Alex must keep the witch pleased while he searches for a way home. He joins Yasmin, another captive, and Lenore, the witch's hard-to-trust cat, in a dark fantasy fight for freedom. The movie mixes family adventure with creepy monsters, danger, jokes, and fairy tale horror.
Alex learns that his love of horror is a strength instead of a flaw, and he stops trying to become normal. Yasmin is a black girl with Ethiopian family roots who uses science, plant knowledge, and courage to help the escape. The two children solve problems through friendship, clever plans, and trust. Natacha's history shows how fear, loneliness, and abandonment can turn a child into a cruel captor, while Alex and Yasmin choose to help each other.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Nightbooks.
Woke representation / casting
Yasmin is a black girl with Ethiopian roots, and she has a major heroic role. The film shows her as skilled with science, plants, and potions, and she helps lead the escape. Her family background is tied to her story, and modern New York makes the casting plausible. The film does not frame the casting as a wider diversity campaign.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue deals with scary stories, friendship, fear, and escape. It does not argue for a modern political cause or identity policy.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The film tells children to value their interests and friends, but it does not build the story around race, sex, sexuality, or activist identity politics. Its main themes are courage, creativity, and self-acceptance.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The witch's abuse and the children's fight to escape are fantasy conflicts. Alex is teased by classmates, but the film does not turn that into a wider attack on schools, men, family, religion, capitalism, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film makes ordinary adaptation changes to Alex's backstory, Yasmin's role, and the magical apartment. Those changes do not present a woke or identity message.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction or specific complaints. Wider reviews and audience posts discussed scares, pacing, and age fit rather than woke, DEI, or identity politics claims.
0%
Creator track record context
Most of the key creators have low woke scores and no public activist record. Mikki Daughtry has written a sapphic romance, which gives her the clearest identity-related context among the listed writers. David Yarovesky and the producers show no recorded activist or identity-focused track record. This movie's horror story does not strongly match an activist pattern.
