Plankton lives in Bikini Bottom, where he runs the failing Chum Bucket and keeps trying to steal the Krabby Patty formula. He returns home after another failure and finds that his computer wife, Karen, has turned the restaurant into a successful business. Plankton rejects her plan, destroys the restaurant, and pushes Karen to remove her empathy chip and build a giant machine to take over the world. The bright undersea comedy mixes songs, wild action, strange flashbacks, and a serious story about a damaged marriage.
Karen is the film's strongest identity-related focus because she moves from a support role to the smartest and most powerful character in Bikini Bottom. She leads her own plan, becomes the main threat, and refuses to keep helping a husband who ignores her. Sandy, Pearl, and Mrs. Puff also work as the Gal Pals, a female team that helps save the town. These choices create a clear message about female strength, but the movie keeps that message inside a comic love story about empathy, apology, and treating a partner with respect.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Plankton: The Movie.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast uses established animated Bikini Bottom characters, and the film does not make race, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, or diversity-first casting part of its story. The live-action beach crowd is only background material.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on world domination, marriage, empathy, and saying sorry. It does not argue for a current political cause or identity policy.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Karen is called the smartest citizen of Bikini Bottom, and she takes control after Plankton ignores her for years. The Gal Pals form a female team that helps lead the rescue. The story gives these characters strong control over events while it presents Plankton as a selfish and incompetent husband. The movie keeps this message inside a comic marriage and villain plot, so it does not make a wider political case about gender.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film does not attack men, family life, religion, capitalism, or a Western institution. Plankton’s bad behavior is treated as a problem in one marriage, not as a wider cultural claim.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie adds comic backstory details about Karen and Plankton. Those details explain their relationship and are not used to make an identity statement.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small anonymous X post called the film “DEI till it bleeds” and blamed sanitized, policed humor. A separate small account pushed back against TikTok claims that the film looked woke. The supplied X pass found no large right-leaning accounts, boycotts, review-bombing, or major outlet campaign. This backlash is fringe and does not prove that the film contains those messages.
12%
Creator track record context
Not present. The cached creator summaries give the key creators a 0/100 score. They show comedy and animation work, with no high-confidence record of activist, DEI, or identity-driven advocacy.
