Tim Goodman is a 21-year-old former Pokémon trainer who has stopped caring about the creatures he once loved. He travels to Ryme City after his detective father, Harry, is presumed dead after a car crash. Tim meets Harry’s former partner, a talking Pikachu who has lost his memory, and only Tim can understand him. The pair follows clues through a bright city where humans and Pokémon live together, mixing a family mystery with jokes, action, and strange creature moments.
The film centers on Tim repairing his broken relationship with his father and learning to trust a partner again. It presents the peaceful bond between humans and Pokémon as better than treating Pokémon as tools. A villain uses a chemical and Mewtwo to force humans and Pokémon into one shared form. Justice Smith’s biracial hero adds a visible representation signal, but the story stays focused on family, friendship, and teamwork.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
Woke representation / casting
Justice Smith plays Tim as a biracial young man at the center of the film’s main adventure. Justice Smith said the role mattered because Black, brown, and mixed-race boys could see that they belong in Pokémon. The film does not make Tim’s race part of the mystery. Ryme City is presented as a diverse modern city. The casting signal stays light and does not drive the story.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Reddit thread reported a conservative viewer calling the film woke because trainers and Pokémon act like partners instead of masters and servants. Some commenters also treated Tim’s casting as a race-change issue. The discussion is small and mostly mocks the complaint. The main news and social reaction focused on furry Pokémon designs and fan excitement, so the anti-woke backlash stays isolated.
8%
Creator track record context
Most credited writers and producers have no known activist or identity-focused record. Don McGowan has publicly attacked anti-woke gamers and DEI opponents. Sarah Halley Finn has supported stronger racial and gender diversity in casting on other projects. These facts give light background context. The film does not turn those views into its story.
