Lucky Prescott is a restless girl who has grown up in a city with her aunt. She travels to the frontier town of Miradero to stay with Jim, the father she barely knows. Lucky bonds with a wild horse named Spirit, but thieves capture his herd and plan to sell the horses for hard work. Lucky, Pru, and Abigail ride across dangerous land to save them in a bright and simple family adventure.
The movie puts a mixed group of brave girls at the center of a Western rescue. Lucky follows the memory of her Mexican mother through Spanish words, a song, and a group of women riders. Pru is a skilled black rodeo rider, while Abigail adds courage and humor to the team. The story often favors girl power and freedom from strict rules for ladies, but it gives equal weight to friendship, family grief, trust, and care for horses.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Spirit Untamed.
Woke representation / casting
The main team is built as one white girl, one girl with a Mexican mother, and one Black girl. Lucky leads the rescue, while Pru is already a top rodeo rider and Abigail is another brave rider. Lucky’s Mexican mother and an all-woman riding group add more female and Latina focus. The choices are easy to see, though the Western setting gives the Mexican and black characters some natural story fit.
44%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The governor campaign is a comic plot setup. No character gives activist or party-political speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Lucky’s journey ties bravery and belonging to the Mexican mother she never knew. Spanish words, her mother’s song, a sash, and women riders make those roots recur through the movie. The three girls form a sisterhood that handles the central rescue. Family grief, friendship, and love of horses still carry as much weight as identity.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie treats strict rules about being a proper lady as a cage for Lucky. Lucky proves that a girl can lead a dangerous Western rescue, and Aunt Cora also leaves her rule-bound role and joins the action. Jim learns to trust Lucky instead of keeping her away from horses. His fear comes from his wife’s death, so the movie does not cast fathers or men as the main problem.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie reworks the Netflix show’s opening as a stand-alone story. It does not make an identity-driven change to an established character.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Fan complaints mainly say the movie is too simple, too girly, or weak compared with the original. Those complaints do not clearly accuse it of pushing DEI or left-wing politics.

Creator track record context
Cached creator scores are low for Wallington, Torresan, Bogan, and Foster. Kristin Hahn has the only clear moderate score at 48 because she has backed more chances for women and inclusive female stories. Elaine Bogan has a mild score of 15, while the other three range from 0 to 8. The group’s past record gives mild support to the movie’s girl-power focus.
