Lisbeth Salander is a skilled hacker and a lone fighter living in Stockholm. She is hired to recover Firefall, a computer program that can control nuclear weapons around the world. The job puts her against spies, cybercriminals, corrupt officials, and her separated sister Camilla. Lisbeth also tries to protect a gifted child while facing memories of her abusive father. The film uses a cold, dark look and a fast action style, so family pain often sits behind the chase scenes.
The film presents Lisbeth as a woman who punishes men who abuse women, and its opening shows her taking money from an abuser and giving it to his victims. Her childhood trauma and her sister's abuse keep that harm against women tied to the main family conflict. Lisbeth is bisexual and has a brief sexual relationship with Sofia, a woman played by Andreja Pejić. The film gives Lisbeth most of the power and makes Mikael Blomkvist and many male enemies less capable, but the main story remains a computer thriller about nuclear danger rather than a campaign about current identity politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Girl in the Spider's Web.
Woke representation / casting
Lisbeth is played as a white Swedish woman, which fits the story's setting. The film includes a black American NSA agent and a brief female lover played by trans actress Andreja Pejić. Press coverage made Pejić's casting part of the film's identity discussion. The main cast does not show a repeated one-of-each pattern, so the signal is limited.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film has no speeches about identity politics, DEI, or current left-wing causes. The dialogue stays on hacking, revenge, family trauma, and nuclear danger.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film shows Lisbeth punishing a man who beats women and giving money to his victims. The story also ties her mission to abuse by her father and the harm done to her sister. Lisbeth is bisexual and briefly has a female lover, but the romance is not the main plot. These elements create a recurring female-protection and personal-justice thread, while the main story remains a computer thriller.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows corrupt officials and violent men, but it treats them as thriller villains. It does not make a modern attack on Western institutions, family life, religion, or traditional social rules.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film skips earlier novels and changes the cast, but those are ordinary sequel and adaptation choices. It does not clearly rewrite an established character or canon point for an identity message.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Rotten Tomatoes audience review called the film a progressive checkbox, objected to Lisbeth being gay, and called her an invincible girlboss. Other audience and news discussion focused more on weak writing, generic action, and the change from earlier films. No broad anti-woke campaign is visible in the main coverage. The backlash evidence is real but limited.
15%
Creator track record context
Stieg Larsson's work has a strong anti-racist and feminist background. David Lagercrantz has supported women's rights and opposed racism. Steven Knight, Fede Álvarez, and Jay Basu have mainly worked in genre stories with little public activist activity. This gives the title a moderate creator track record signal.
