Bruce Cogburn is a famous writer who has lived alone in the desert for 25 years. A teenage gunman once blamed Bruce's only novel for a college shooting that killed 13 people. Endless letters from a fan pull Bruce into a tense hunt through phone calls, a prison visit, and attacks near his home. The slow mystery grows darker as Bruce's lies and fear begin to close around him.
The story keeps returning to questions about God, blame, and whether people control their own lives. The novel inside the movie pictures God as cold while people fall like a row of dominoes. Those ideas come from badly troubled men, so the movie does not make them into a clear political message. Bruce's main path is personal because he must admit that he stole the book from a student and built his life on the lie.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Infernal Machine.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The core cast is mostly White men, with Alice Eve as a local police officer. The small supporting mix fits the modern American Southwest and is not presented as a diversity goal.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The college shooting and the book's effect raise questions about art and violence. The story does not turn them into party politics, gun-control activism, or current left-wing messaging.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The plot focuses on guilt, theft, stalking, and revenge. Bruce's question about who he is concerns his stolen success and personal honesty, not race, gender, or sexuality.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The story repeatedly uses a book about a priest who meets a cold and careless God. A mass killer says his murders punished God. Elijah says his near-death state showed him nothing and rejects all religious belief. The film gives these ideas to unstable and violent men, so it questions faith without building a wider political attack on Christianity.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adds new material to an original podcast story, but no identity-driven change to a known character or real person appears.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Web, review, and social searches found no claims that the film pushes DEI, identity politics, or a left-wing agenda.
0%
Creator track record context
Andrew Hunt has a stored score of 0 and no known activist pattern. Spencer McLaren has a stored score of 50 because of his public support for LGBTQ+ representation and related projects. The other three producers have stored scores from 4 to 5. The group score stays low because one moderate record sits among four low records.
